Just got a used brake controller and hooked it up to my 92 F250. Got some wires crossed, then straigtened that out, but I think I might have smoked the controller. I thought the led was supposed to light when the power and ground were connected, regardless of wether or not the triler is connected, and I have nothing at any time, brake pedal depressed or slide lever activated. I searched for troubleshooting but all I can find is for with trailer connected tessts. I verified power to the blck wire and groud on the white. Blue is connected to the blue on the truck side, wich should go to the trailer plug, and I have the red going to the brake light switch.
TIA!
But then, my opinion, get yourself a Prodigy. You don't have to level it, it gives way more feedback to the driver than just one LED and they are not expensive, about $100.

I agree the Prodigy is worth the price difference in most cases, but this one was free and money's been REAL tight lately.
There is a Tekonsha Voyager in the company truck that I drive for work. There are normally no lights whatsoever on it at any time until a trailer is connected.

Well that makes me feel better. I dont have my trailer nearby so I'll have to wait to try it out. If I were to ground the blue wire or run it to ground through a resistor to simulate the trailer brakes, it should turn on the LED.. in theory. Any thoughts on that?

The common way to do this is to use a magnet from a trailer brake, but comparable resistance should light you light!
light only turns on when trailer is plugged in. should light up green and turn red as the brakes are engaged. I agree on getting a better one, these voyagers are ok but leave a lot to be desired

I have to disagree about the Voyager unit.
I have had hands on about 5 of them now and they are a great (kinda old school controller) I personally don't need all the fancy digital stuff thats on the market.
My '99 F350 HAD an OLD Tekonsha Commander controller in it when I purchased it-THAT COMMANDER controller was a BIG P O S!
