Must be a demon in my shop! Went to check my 4wd today and shifting my transfer case does nothing seems to just be stuck in 4wd H lever moves but no change no netural at tc either. 1977 400, C6 married NP203 also is there a married version of the NP205? Please help i have lots of plans but this is going to hold me back.
Has this 203 been converted to part-time?, if not, it sounds as though the chain has went south, can you elaborate more, what is actually happening when you shift? no movement in truck whatsoever? or shifter just not engaging?

Truck runs fine i just wanted to exersize my 4wd so i picked a dirt road put it in 4wd L and then back to 4wd H no change also no netural in the tc
Also, is there resistance when shifting, like it is hooked up properly and going in and out of the different selections, or is it just free movement with no resistance?

yes i feel it click as i shift from 2 to 4 wd but 2wd and 4wd are the same in low and high!
Hard to diagnose over the net, i'm not sure why you see no difference in gearing between Hi and Lo, the part-time conversion kit eliminates the differential inside the 203, but irregardless of the 203 working or not, i'd highly recommend a swap/upgrade to a 205, especially with those 40" meats you're currently mounting, the 205 is just a much more stout t-case than the 203, gear driven as opposed to chain driven, it's virtually bullet proof, literally.
There are two linkages inside the shift lever that get stuck and go bad. When this happens, the lever will click through gears but won't actually do anything. That's one of the reasons I swapped in a 205. Hope this helps.

does the 203 have netural? i can feel it go nto 4L and 4H just feels the same on the road!
Stinky, just get a 205, and the D60 will soon follow, it's a very logical progression , you're putting 40" tires on a drive train designed for 31" tires, not tryin to be a ******** here, just passing along some "been there, done that" advice.
I think you have to change driveshafts when swapping to a 205 though, so its not that simple. I don't think its the chain in the 203, if that failed it probably wouldn't affect your ability to go into 2wd vs 4wd. I'd get under the truck and make sure the linkage is moving with the shifter (may need a helper for that)... but if you do have to drop the case, it probably is worth upgrading to the 205 vs repairing the 203. The 203's are getting rare, though, and you can use the range box off it for a doubler... if its still in working shape. range box is gear to gear so chances are its fine.
