Hello all. I have a 56 with 351w and an AOD what be the best all round gear ratio will not be drag racing mostly cruising with some interstate driving also. It does have a 9 inch rear.
Im going to take a stab at this. Im running a 302/AOD in my 55 with 3:25 ratio in a baby nine (8 inch out of a 66 Fairlane). I hope to run similiar in a 56 I got on the back burner. I would say 3:25 to 3:55 area. In Overdrive if you were much lower numerically like below 3:00 I dont know the gain you would get. I believe Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis, and Towncars came with like 3:27 ratios from the factory. You and me have the exact same driving style/pattern, easy cruisin and road trips. Someone else may came along with different experiences but I hope this helps
I am running stock Dana with 3.92's with the AOD in my 53 with 30" tires. It seems a good fit for my style, except milage is nothing to write home about. Maybe 16mpg on the road at 70-75. 302 with Edelbrock carb and intake. Planning a Tbird IRS soon with a 3.27 gear, probably have to go with a shorter tire I guess.
