I nosed around some, but cant find a list of available gear ratios for the rear ends in the F series pick up trucks. The rear end in mine is a 32 (?) according to my info. I was wondering what ratios were used, and what years were the same. I plan on running an AOD tranny in the truck, but was hoping to stay in the 3:50/3:70ish ratio.
Are these rear ends ('56 F100) 5X5.5"?

As always, thanks guys!
With an AOD you could keep the 3.92 and have the best of both worlds. All 57-72 1/2 ton Ford nine inch rears were 5 on 5.5. There were some 5 on 4.5 nine inchers made in the early 80s but they are slightly wider than the 57-72 rears...
A 3.92 gear should be fine with overdrive. I ran a 3.92 gear in my F-1 with a 700-R4 (.7 overdrive gear). The AOD has a .67 overdrive gear, so it is very similar. At 70 mph, I was turning about 2400 rpm. Not sure if you are planning to run any kind power in your truck, but if you are I would recommend going with a 9 inch because I tore the Dana 44 with 3.92's to pieces. Good luck.
I have a 53 with 5.0 ho w/mass air and aod running 9" 3;50 gears, and 28" tall tires. I'm happy with performance and gas mileage, on a short trip was 19mpg
Caddy 53 chuck centerburg oh.
I just traded out my dana 44 with 4.10s for a 9" with 3.25....the rearend is making some noise so something is wrong but I didnt lose any power except on the highway (struggled to get to 80mph)....something must be wrong and I am going back to the yard to swap for a 72 9" with 3.50s....hopefully this will solve my gas problems with my 302/AOD combo out of a 84 mercury cougar.....any suggestions on better gas mileage would be greatly appreciated.....this is a working project/daily driver....

I'm hoping the stock rear will hold-up. The 302 is stock w/ 2bbl. carb. I dont think I'll be too hard on the old gal.
I was hoping to be around 2100 or so RPM @ highway speed, so I can live with 2400/2500 @ 70.
Thanks for the input guys!

Jim, other than basics... there isnt too much more mechanically to do. You've got the O.D., time to look at everything else. Brakes dragging? Fresh tune-up, engine properly tuned? Carb: Over carbed? Under carbed? Timing? Hows your ignition system? Torque converter bad?
Best gas mileage I've personally heard of from an effie is 22 mpg ave. The guy has a fresh EFI 5.0 with AOD. If I manage near 18 MPG with mine when done, I'll be thrilled! (my '69 Cougar ave. 15 MPG. I KNOW why that one doesnt do better!)
Fresh off the build up of it my 55 got 22 MPG with 3.40 Ratio in a 8". I switched last summer to a 3.55 in that same 8" and went down to 19 MPG but it pulls better. I am running a 5.0 Speed Density EFI/AOD combo out of a 1988 Crown Victoria.
Fresh rebuilt 302, fresh rebuilt AOD, Carb has been tuned (was puffing the old black stuff out), brakes (since using the 69 rear-have to be redone)...dana 44 (original) was already done and running fine!!!!!! torque converter was good from rebuild (brand new), ignition is MSD 6A, no problems there...did a check today...ol skool style (jacked up the truck and placed two jacks on the rearend....put it in drive and the DS wheel was turning freely, the PS was sticking....removed the tire and same action....gave her some gas and the vibration came when i got it up to 15+)....not its either the brakes or the axle might be bent.....going to the shop tomorrow to get it diagnosed for the actual result.....either way the brakes need to be redone and the rearend probably needs to be rebuilt)...why not???? everything else on the truck is rebuilt, NOS or brand new....tell me from what I did could I be correct or is there a possibilty of something MAJOR where the whole rearend is TRASH!!!!!!!! HELP in this area PLEASE!!!!! trying to save mucho dineros $$$$$$
Jim, sorry for the delay.... took the fam. on a mini vacation.
Wish I could tell you "dont sweat it, it'll be cheap!" But that'd be B.S.! This is a serious affliction! (this hobby) Hopefully everything will turn out and it'll be reasonable to repair. (I doubt it) Maybe look for a salvage yard axle with a ratio in the neighborhood of 3:70-ish? I'm leaning this way, after I saw what it would cost to completely rebuild the rear brakes on my original axle!
Keep me posted Jim!
rebuilding the brakes on the original is not that bad....mines were done for under $150...the guys here LOVE ol'skool trucks so i got all kinds of shop hook-ups for places...the rearend place here is a real street drag KING so he likes to put his best in each rearend and have you talk about his business for future customers...don't mind helping the guy out BUT he is pricey!!!!!
