Smokestack did something like this the other day. Smokestack is a spring chicken (69K miles on the odo) and well-cared for. It sounded like backfiring as in a gasser but had no feel to it.
Never in the history of my diesel world has this happened to any truck I know.
What was that?
What causes it?
Should I care?
Smokestack got a new tank of fuel and a Diesel Treat chaser a day or so later. Nothing since.
jk, umm are you sure it was from the engine and not the suspension popping or body flexing? or here is a real shot in the dark.......did the spare tire blow out?

Sheet maing, I have no idea.
A meth lab in Oregon. I thought this was a 420 state, not a tweaker state.
I had S60 Detroit back fire once when trying to start it cold and gelled. Blew both ends off a new muffler. The thinking was unburnt fuel in the exhaust got ignited by slowly burning fuel pushed out an exhaust valve.
Did you hear it or feel it? Intake or exhaust back fire? Does smokestack have stacks, and if so, has it been raining?
Sadly, Smokestack does not, in fact, have smokestacks.
No, I didn't feel it. That was the weird part, along with the fact that no diesel in the history of my world has ever "backfired." Given your stories, I think some flames and explosions would accompany those if it happened in a diesel.
I have concluded than I'm an idiot. But perhaps an idiot important enough to be shot at.... and that I can get meth in sleepy little Oregon.
They can backfire. My 96 did 3 times. The pins going into the valve cover plug didn't lock in place with a new plug. They would randomly make contact which would cause the injector to fire out of time.
Believe me I thought was too when I heard it.
