Also look for a 4-digit number near the casting code, for example 1C30. The 1C30 is the date code so 1=year (get the decade from the casting number if it was D then 1971) C=month-March 30=day so it was made on March 30, 1971
The casting number is the date for the mold. That will only give you an idea when the first bolck was cast, not the last block. Unlike GM, Ford doesn't stamp any numbers that will let you know exactly what year the engine is or what it was originally in.
a lot of times you can id a motor by some of the bracket or pulley part numbers. as an example a 1970 351 c may have a doob-**** for a bracket part number that would make it a torino motor if it had a dooz part number it would be a 1970 mustang motor. it really depends on how bad you want to know what it is. some of the restorations i get in to are concourse correct and that part number means everything. there should be a partial vin stamped on it too back by the transmission and a lot of times that helps id one.
