I responded to an add for a 390 out of a `69 mustang w/trans. headers ,radiator and chrome for 250$. When I got there to pick it up there was a `69 Mustang that the guy swapped in a 460.We were loading it up and talking shop and I mentioned how some guy in the past tried to sell me a 352 block saying it was a 428,' and I looked in the freeze plug hole and it said 352 not 428. Then I looked at the block casting code that this guy had and it was D3TE so I knew it wasn`t a `69 block but I already gave him the money, so I took it anyway thinking it was probably a 361 that I could use in my `71 F-250 . I got it home and tore it down. It is a `75 390 truck engine w/re-enforced main webs and 3U crank,c7ae-b rods and 410 pistons that they put in to lower the compression, and a Crane 278 cam. I dropped it off at the speed shop w/ the 1U 428 crank that I had laying around to have it sonic tested and to see if we can make it into a 428. Life is like a box of chocolates!
Nice score! Even if it can be bored out to 080 over you might think about just going 060 over in order to give yourself a rebuild later. 423cid vs 428 isn't much difference. Just a thought.
All the 390 plain jane stock engines up here are getting $500-$800 for just the engine, no trans or headers. My truck has a 360 in it now, I'd like to go larger in the future, but we'll se how she unfolds once she's on the road.
