Cool 2004 5 speed shifting problems

I have a 2004 Ranger(89,000miles) with a 5 speed manual transmission. The problem was there when we bought the truck, but only intermittently. Shifting from neutral into first would sometimes require you to jam it hard to get it to engage. There is never any grinding, just seems like it's binding. Now it takes a miracle to get it into first and is getting hard to get it into second. Again, no grinding what so ever. I have no idea on where to even start on trying to problem solve this other than checking the hydraulic fluid, which I did and it's fine. The clutch feels normal when depressing the pedal. Any ideas???

I'm not a big guy on manuals so don't take this as a diagnosis, but it sounds like synchros to me.

Has the trans oil ever been changed? That can make a big difference in how well they shift, particularly in the lower gears and lower speed.

be sure your actually filling the reservoir, there is a black plastic peice inside the clear (clutch) master cyl reservoir, i had at one time thought i had a full master when i had in fact not. the black peice i think is to act as a addtional barrier against moisture and expand/contract slightly. how does it go in & out of gear while parked with the engine off? could be a clutch not quite disengaging. just a couple of thoughts...

While moving it shifts just fine, it's while setting at a light or stop sign that it has the issues. When the truck if off it goes into gears just fine.

In that case, you likely just need to flush the clutch fluid. This is something that really should be done every couple of years, just like the brake fluid in the brake system.

I agree, with it just acting out when your at a stop, it sounds like a problem with the clutch hydraulic system. Maybe air in the system & it's a bear to bleed all of the air out of it sometimes. Check the "Tech Info" thread atop this forum for good tips on how to change fluid, or bleed air out of the system, or replace parts, if you find thats your problem.

Also make sure the tranny has the Specified fluid in it & it's not 90wt gear lube in there.
Let us know how it goes.

Another issue I have found at work is the pilot bearing is dry and the needle bearings are grinding into powder. This sometimes causes the main shaft in the tranny to keep pressure on the drivetrain even after the clutch is depressed. I hope it is just a simple bleeding issue and not something too expensive. Good luck.

Ok, bled the hydraulics and got a bunch of dark fluid and a bunch of white sludge. I have no idea what the white sludge is, but there was at least a thimble full. Anyway, bled the system until I got bubble free, clean fluid then cycled it a couple more times just to be sure and tightened it all back up. Worked like a charm. Shifts nice and smooth. Thanks again for all the info guys, really appreciate it.

Maybe read through all of the postings here, from our "Tech Info" thread on how to bleed the slave cylinder. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/2...ding-help.html
