1986 diesel project

I just got a 1986 F250 6.9idi auto trans 4x2 that does not currently run. the previous owner said it needed a new flywheel and starter and it was good to go.

I had the idea to do a complete project on it, bore it out to a 7.3, throw on a turbo, convert to a manual trans, throw in a transfer case, and maybe spice things up a lil with some body work and a small lift

I am by no means a super mechanic, and before i go spending a wallet-full of money on it (im sure it will cost alot) i am wondering if yall think its even worth it.

please let me know your thoughts on this project, as i know, the best wisdom comes from experience.

Thanks yall

I know this type of question had been asked alot, but my specific questions, i never found a straight forward answer for

What transmissions bolt up to the 6.9 idi?

Has anyone else seen/heard/doneitthemselves of a 4x2 to 4x4 conversion for this model truck?

thanks again y'all

Your transmission will be a C6 so would probably want to look for another diesel C6 except 4x4 with a transfer case (unless you want to swap to manual trans).
All in all a lot of work.

As far as manuals go, there is a 4spd, 5spd, and the 6spd can be made to work with some tinkering. (T-19?, ZF-5, ZF-6) if you get really creative, the idi is a SAE#2 bell from what i hear, you could put a 9 spd in it if ya wanted to work at it. As far as 2wd to 4sd, pretty straight forward, unbolt 2wd stuff, bolt in 4x4 stuff. Lift at this point would be easy, snag a D60 and put some superduty springs under it and away ya go.
As far as engine work goes i strongly recommend NOT boring a 6.9 to a 7.3. The cylinder walls are too thin and cavitation becomes a more likely problem. Besides that, once bored that far you have to sleeve it if you ever need to clean up the cylinders. I suggest a kosher .030 or .040 overbore to clean things up if necessary. "throwing on a turbo" makes it sound alot easier than it actually is. Especially if you are looking for a "little more" than the average IDI. A set of studs, a good turbo and maybe some shaved pistons, along with a good pump and set of injectors will get you there.

On these trucks 2wd to 4wd is a big project, you have to modify the frame horns. IIRC the SAE2 bellhousing adapter can be had from an International truck. The adapter plate on these motors is for a ford diesel pattern. So any trans from a ford diesel pickup would work. Keep your motor at 6.9L smoe 7.3's have cavitation issues due to thin cylinder walls.

You will be far cheaper in money and time to replace the flywheel and starter to get your truck running and then sell it. Take the profits and just buy a F-350 4x4 to start your project. The F-350 is better as it has solid axle D60, the F-250 has the twin-traction beam D50. Much easier to lift the solid axle version.

This is an excellent point... however availability could be an issue. Right off hand i cant think of any IDI's being for sale locally... ever. Let alone a specific truck. Could do some checkin to see if there are any around you though.
