I have decided to put an intercooler on my truck. I can get a 7.3 PSD intercooler and plan to run an ebay pipe kit, either a 2 or 2.5 inch. I am confident that I can do the job myself, but where can I pick up an intake hat for the install? I have seen where some guys make them, and I have also seen cast aluminum aftermarket hats. Can anyone direct me to either of these?
I've not found anyplace that sells only the intake hat or snail as it's also called. I never got an answer from ATS and only a canned response from Banks with links to Power Stroke stuff and a number to call.
Not much out there for these old ladies. You have to get inventive. Some of the stuff is plain crazy the dollar amount they want.
I have a spare hat, it would come at a high price though because my kit is complete, selling just that would ruin my chances at selling it all. Pm me if ur interested
Everything I've heard, don't bother with a 7.3L Intercooler, they are limiting. Either get one from a 6.0L, or a custom made one. Either of those will blow the 7.3L away by a mile.

OK, again, our IDI engines do not use the boost that a PS does, I have run BOTH the 6.0 and 7.3 IC . NO difference. I max at 16 lbs. I even cut off 6 inches of the 7.3 ic to have more airflow over the ac and rad. works great.
As far as a 6.0 being an upgrade for a 7.3 ps, dont know, funny thing is they are the same size core.
Everyone I know who has the 7.3PSD, has swapped to a 6.0L IC and swears by it, from the mall crawlers, to the heavy workers. Don't own one yet, but saving up for one.
A common upgrade for the 7.3L PSD is a 6.0 Intercooler, even oreo is running a 6.0 intercooler. How is that wrong?

Oreo didn't see much boost. I think 4psi was his max with 2 inch piping and 6.0 intercooler. That was related to boost leaks most likely and his tiny downpipe so I wont say that is a reason to discount the 6.0 IC.
If you know guys who upgraded their stock IC's and put 6.0 IC's in running with their 7.3 PSD engines, you are right, they will see improvement. 6.0 IC's are designed to take more heat. So when PSD's boost, they create heat and the 6.0 IC's cool the air better. Thats talking 25psi+ though after the intercooler. That is not near the amount that a average IDI makes. Most make around 10psi so the air doesn't get nearly as hot.
My IDI made about 12-13psi before the intercooler and now it makes 9psi empty with 2.5 inch piping and a 7.3 IC. There is no crazy amount of boost to cool so a 6.0 is not necessary. It would just make the boost come slower because the turbo has more space to fill before getting to the intake manifold. Not coming at ya snuff, just letting you know that a psd will see improvement from a larger than 7.3 IC, not a IDI.
Ya gotta go and call bs to get someone to show their math.
Didn't take it the wrong way, to many people just say **** is wrong, and leave it at that. I'm learning everyday with this truck. Rather be wrong and know why, than the alternative.
I build one that uses 3 inch tubing. Cant post pics here foor some reason.
I'm sure you remember me saying this but I think the banks turbo sits over the intake manifold too much for your hat to fit. Maybe this pic will show what I mean, I guess we will never know until someone tries it out though?
