Okay guys...I know a significant number of you out there have and recommend an ignition upgrade can you all pass on your preference and why/how it worked out for you?
It is a little confusing looking at all the different manufacturers and the different selection.
I have an HEI system from Performance Distributors, and it was one of the best upgrades I ever made to anything. A little pricey, just under $400 delivered, but no more high end misfire, no wiring problems, no burned out ignition modules, just runs. Tons more towing power too-
If you are moving to a ignition system with a bigger spark could the stock duraspark II distributor handle it(hotter spark) from an upgraded coil and box?
I bought my MSD box, coil, and DII adapter from PAW. The box was around $150, the coil was around $30, and the harness was another $15. Prices are about the same everywhere. You could try ebay, but I wouldn't buy an pre-owned electronic component like this. The service and response was professional, as most of the larger suppliers like Jegs and Summit are. My only complaint is the leads off the MSD box are way to short for a clean install. I had to buy a bunch of wire (to keep the color coding) and extend the stock leads...a lot depends on how you want to set it up. I stated install was easy - that was on my '79 F100. Search this topic, there have been a number of threads about the aftermarket ignition setups.
ok just wondering
maybe gettin a 150 with a 300 six and is it needed to to change the springs/ counter-weights in the dizzy for high end use
probally a good idea but wondering
hey newinlinesixguy, be careful about thinking that what you're reading here will apply to your truck.... it looks like most everyone that has posted here has an older carbureted truck that originally had a DS II system; I don't know how the ignition is controlled on your EFI truck, but I would guess it's all wrapped up in the computer system? I don't know... just something to think about.
Newinlinesixguy:
Some people have had great results with MSD Ignition components. A spark control box, coil, wires and all your typical ignition tune up stuff.
I imagine you could get all the MSD stuff you'd need for about $250 bucks new. you might get a good deal on it used, but i'd shy away from that as you don't know the condition other than what you've been told.
I am slowly going through the truck an replacing components that will help its performance and basic mechanical soundness. I don't know the history of the truck but I think it used to be a farm truck that was rode hard and put away wet.
Some of the parts were on the verge of falling off the truck. It would appear that whoever had it before I did tried to repaint it and cosmetically clean it up.
So I am inside of it replacing and upgrading so all of the posts are extremely helpful.
