First thing I would do is use a real volt meter to test the alt. output. The indash gauge is not the most accurate. If the alt. has high miles on it, it may have worn the brushes down to a nub. For some reason they always seem to wear one brush down more that the other. But check the 'true' voltage output both with the fans not running and with them running and let us know.

The truck is an 1988. I don't know how to differentiate the style. It has an internal regulator. The voltage is good at idle or any other time until I turn on the heater fan or my new cooling fan. Then if I need lights and wipers it gets even worse to the point that lights start to dim.
