ECT and EOT

I was wondering what is the max you can let these two get individually before you just HAVE to shut the engine down to avoid a catastrophic meltdown?

The oil filter standpipe melts at 350* EOT at which point you HAVE to replace the entire engine when the plastic runs through the oil passages. The block is not salvagable at that point.

Just my opinion. My delta is 11-12deg when doing the check but I see much higher temps when towing (10k 5th wheel). After careful consideration, I decided to ease up in her at 240 and pull over for an idle session at 255 EOT. My ECT creeps up some when towing, but the EOT is always higher and is what I use for a deciding factor. Btw, I haven't had to pull over yet.

Also if it's overheating I wouldn't shut it down unless it's spraying coolant or oil. It will cool off quicker at an idle.

Glad I asked this, definitely did not know that...

Excellent advice. You want coolant flow and air flow to continue so that engine heat can be dissipated. A super heated engine may boil over if you simply shut it down.

After doing ARP Studs and new Head Gaskets along with Bulletproof Remote Oil Cooler and EGR Cooler tried towing this past week. ECT temps peaked at around 214 degrees and the EOT max was around 210 degrees. Towing triple slide 5th whl at around 11K lbs. EGT temps did climb more then I like, up around 1200 degrees till I backed off to another gear, then dropped to around 1050 degrees. Most of time ECT and EOT stayed pretty close to around 200 degrees while doing the run to the Coast and back. Two lane and Freeway driving.

1200 is NOT abig deal...... You can let it go 1300- 1350......then start thinking about backing off..... lots here say 1400 is OK.

If I recall correctly, the computer will defuel it if it goes too high!

It's all about the heat soak. I've pulled extended periods at 1250 and things tend to get warm. I don't go over that pulling but I've been to 1600+ several times down the track and that's no big deal because it cools almost instantly. There's nothing in the PCM to defuel for EGT's. Defuel occurs at 254* EOT.

Stu--your temps are excellent for towing 11K although you don't mention the speed you pulled at. You could pull coast to coast all day like that and shouldn't have a problem.

As I was towing on the two lane hwy, I tried to keep my speed around 55 to 60mph, on the freeway I am limited to 60 mhp by state law, do get it up around 62 if I can to drop into 4th and lower RPM'S. Also at times I use a Radar Detector so I can gauge my speed as I am towing. The States of Oregon/California all post towing speeds at 55 even on freeways and at times write tickets at 57 if you are from out of state. So you have to watch your speed as well as your temps as you tow.

My temps towing a 10,000 lb fifth wheel are up to 241 EOT on my scan gauge and 255 EOT on my gauge with sensor in the oil pan. The ECT's are great and will go down as soon as my fan comes on. The trouble is I can get up to 45 degree delta when that happens. I am strongly thinking about the bulletproof oil cooler. I always have to back off while climbing hills because of my EOT gets too hot. It would be nice to use the power of my truck without constantly worrying about oil temps.

If you have the coin then IMHO that's the way to go. You won't have to worry about oil temps again. I haven't had the opportunity to pull anything since I put mine in a year or so ago but even with our hot summer I never got to >100* ambient in town in stop and go traffic with the AC blasting.

Your oil never got over 100°? Is that °F? Seems to me that could be a problem.

Randy 7, If I was you I would get the Bulletproof Diesel Oil Cooler installed on your rig, This past week I was towing a 29.5 triple slide 5th whl and my temps on the oil didn't get over 220degrees. I think the hottest that the ECT was around 214 to 220 and the EOT tracked within 5 to 10 degrees of the ECT. I was watching the temps on an Edge Insight Gauge, usually the temps stayed around 200 or so on the gauge from both readings. This was the first towing I have did after my truck was rebuilt. Towed good and fuel mileage wasn't too bad, around 10.5 pulling. Will have to tow more to see how the new mods I did work out over time. I blew the HG on my trip back home from Yuma in April this year. Did pull some grades at too high of boost, caused by a bad Unison ring in the turbo. Now have new turbo, and EGR/OIL Coolers from Bulletproof along with ARP Studs.
