my father in-law just gave me a 1987 F-250. he said it hasnt run good for several years. i rebiut the carb new plugs wires and cap, and of course all the normal stuff ( battery oil, filter etc). i now have the pickup running. which is a complete improvment from what i started i couldnt get her to start before i rebuilt the carb. it has a 460 under the lid, and i just dont feel that it has near the power that is should. do i need new coil or what. please help me.
I would check your vacuum hoses, especially the ones that go to the Distributor. I am not sure if your truck is old enough to have points, but if it does I would replace them as well. Replace the condenser with the points........
How many miles? How long since it last ran? Is it running rough at all or just seems to have low power? Is there any discolored smoke coming from the tailpipe [i.e. blue smoke indicates burning oil, white smoke indicates burning antifreeze]?
Depending on the mileage and more importantly, how long it was sitting, you could be looking at stuck rings. Pull the plugs and run a compression check on all the cylinders. Loss of compression will certainly contribute to loss of power.
However, it could also be a fuel delivery issue. Did you replace the fuel filter? Is it an electric or mechanical fuel pump? The fuel lines could be gummed up and slowing down flow.
I know there's some other things to consider but that's all I can think of for now. Good luck.

it seems to be running fairly smooth. there is no odd colored smoke it only sat for a few months when he finally gave up on it. electric fuel pump
they are inside under the Distributor cap/rotor. When you take the cap off, there is a rotor that is attached to the end of the distributor shaft. This lifts straight off and you will see something that looks like a silver battery with a wire coming from it (condenser) and the points are there as well. Here is a link that may explain it better. HowStuffWorks "Ignition System Distributor" Ford at some point started putting Electric controlled Firing Ignition (EFI) and it replaced the old point system, so until you look you wont know what is under the cap.
well one thing to consider is the '87 460 is only rated at 225 HP and on a truck that old the engine might just be tired. even if it's not an F250 is not light. I just had a 220HP 350 crate motor put in my blazer and it really doesn't have much pep. I have a '90 F250 supercab long box 4x4 with a 460, auto tranny, and 3.55:1 gears and performance isn't impressive but it will still do some work. you could always try the classic bolt-on HP goodies like exhaust, bigger carb, and intake manifold. I don't think coils are very expensive so you could always try it but if the truck seems to be running smooth then that's probably not the issue.
the old man says it isnt making the power that it was years back.
well then the next question is how many miles are on it? could be the engine is just old and tired. you could always drop in a 450HP crate motor hopefully that's not the case.
oh ya milage the odometer says 35k so it means 35k or 135k or 235k or 335k. i doubt its more thann 135k i hasnt made it far off the reservation since he bought back in the day
yeah a 450HP crate motor costs about what another F250 would but it's only money. you don't need to eat EVERY day do you? at 135K the engine should still have some life left unless it was abused which doesn't sound like the case.
