I am in need of replacing my rear drums in my '75 4x4. I was hoping to get any tips on removal of the drums and where to purchase. I have looked online for parts and the pics do not reflect the same shape of my drum. I am also not familiar with drum systems so maybe I am missing something. The current setup looks like a much larger drum and it has the axle bolted to the end. The pics online of the replacement does not look to accommodate the axle and bearing at the end. ???????? Any ideas? Thanks Guys.
take a hammer and firmly (not as hard as you can) hit around the drum, and try and wiggle it side to side to get it off. If you get one side started, use a beefy flat head screwdriver or something equivalent and use it to pry the drum off if you get a section started, and continue hitting the drum while prying with the screwdriver.
so if the wheel has been taken off the drum should come off easy? Like a rotor without the caliper? The drum comes to a funnel shape and the axles look to bolt to the end. I unbolted the "axle" and pulled it out. It didn't seem to loosen up anything and it exposed a set of bearings at the end where the "axle" was removed. It doesn't look like I could just hit it to loosen it.
i don't know much about the highboys, thus not much about the rear ends. Someone else i'm sure will come along that has knowledge about your truck, but my guess is that your drum shouldn't be much different than mine for a 9" on my f100. If you have a picture to show what you're talking about i might be able to help.
You gotta loosen the adjuster screw so the shoes back off of the drum. Its the opening on the back side on the bottom. It should have a plug in it but with age they usually disappear. Its a little oval opening and you need to turn the gear until the drum slides off.
You have a dana 60 rear end and you have to take the hub off. theres 2 nuts in the end of the axle insidee the hub (you should be able to see them with the axle shaft out) Then you slide the hub, drum, and bearings off. I would recommend getting a new seal.

Awesome replies guys! Thanks. I was considering having it done by a mechanic, but I think I will do it myself with the help of the pictured step by step. "a boy and his jeep" helped a bunch. Thanks again!
