96 250 4x4 supercab shifting funny at times
sup peeps? i have a 96 250 supercab 4x4 with 5.8l and e4od tranny. the other day i had to stop kind of hard and well when i went to take off again the truck started to kind of shift hard and well after having to drive it because its the only means of transportation it smoothed out. after driving it for a few days. my mind is boggled. any ideas before i change the filter and fluid whn i gt a chance. and also the overdrive button on the shifter doesnt light up and well im gnna try to fix that too. any sugestions would be nice due to the fact times are hard and i got rugrats.
thanks.

The E4OD transmission is 100% electronic controlled. Check for codes before throwing money at the problem.
Warm up the engine and transmission then do this: Ford Fuel Injection » How To Run a Self-Test
Or purchase one of these: Equus 3145 Ford Digital Code Reader
Your truck should display 3 digit codes.

thanks for the info and well i did all three of what you said and still got no codes. but i was checking my oil a last week and noticed compared to my tranny dipstick the one for the motor oil was way shorter. so i wen to the local junkyard and luckily i found a truck with the motor jus like mine. so i was down about two quarts so i put the oil in and i havent had anymore issues with the tranny as of now. but i wonder if you might know y that would affect the tranny like it did?

You added two quarts of oil to the transmission or engine?
Define this statement. "thanks for the info and well i did all three of what you said and still got no codes" What do you mean by "no codes" Did you get the all clear of 111/111 (3 digit) or 11/11 (2 digit)?
If not you have other problems....

lol yea i added the oil to the engine as to that was what was low. and well all the codes came up clear of 111/111 and i even spent a little cash with a friend that works @ ford dealer and they came up with nothing as well. but i still need to fix the overdrive button. the bulb is burnt out.

i had the same problem with my E4OD a week ago. it turned out to be a bad VSS. i replaced that and i cant feel most of the shifts now. when a sensor goes out (could be MLPS, RABS, VSS) the E4OD pretty much loses all of its brains as it relies on the VSS to tell it what speed im going so that it shifts. when a sensor goes out that the E4OD relies on, it picks wrong shift points and the PSI goes from 50 PSI to 150 PSI which is why you feel your hard shifts. get on replacing whatever sensor is out because that will damage the transmission. if you cant identify what it is then id start with VSS as thats the cheapest and easiest
