I have a 98 with the same problem right now. To purchase just the bars (not the brackets), it would be $225 per bar from Ford. I'm not sure how that is relatively speaking, I'm still deciding to whether to check around some more or have it repaired. I will do something, though. The body, overall is in great shape and this baby has a lot of life left in it.
Before I sold my '98 Sport, I took the bars off, sanded them down and sprayed them with bedliner from Pep Boys... they had to sit for two days to setup, but they turned out great. You could probably do the same with regular paint. The corners on mine were plastic, but they came apart.
Thanks for the posts Matt, SplashMan. Did some checking on the internet last night, theres lots of aftermarket options available. I was even thinking about going to a running board instead of the rail type thats on there now. I'm trying to keep the cost down however. The vehicle is in great shape, but those rusty rails really look bad.
Hello..I had my side rails from my '99 explorer sport sandblasted....then sprayed with a coating of stone guard.....then painted the original titanium silver colour on top....the paint has a slight rippled look because of the stoneguard underneath...but it still loks great and has survived an Ontario winter with no problem.
