low range not working right

low range not working right
on my 87' 4.9L I was attempting to use the 4 low to pull my brothers chevy out of the mud and it didn't want to stay in....
I never had this problem before, but I hardly ever use 4 low unless im pulling someone out of a ditch or something. It would only work if I held it in a certain place. It used to just go in and stay in...
I haven't used it much like I said but esp since I replaced the clutch this past summer. Obviously something isn't lining up but could it be from putting everything back together after I did the clutch job. I haven't crawled under it yet to get a closer look yet though.
Any tips?

That im not sure about...but if its going in and out of 4x4, its got to be transfer case. bumping this so a more experienced guy can come and help.
