bought this truck from a dealership. has 182k. drove it about 200 miles and it used about 2 gallons of coolant. brought it back today and they took off the left valve cover. had a green slimer sludge covering the underside. cleaned that out and assembled. filled with coolant and drove about 5 miles total and let it idle to see how bad it smoked. smokes not thick but its raw fuel. runs smooth and has good power. after getting back to the dealer it idled for about 10 minutes or so and we shut it off. i went back out about 15 minutes after shutting it off and it was hydrolocked. i just need some advise on what could be causing the white smoke out of the tailpipe and the coolant loss?
there is no coolant mixing with the oil in the crankcase, some smoke from the dipstick tube.
bad injector sleeve?
bad injector o rings?
leaking oil cooler?
cracked block
Could be a few things. My instant thought is cavitation erosion on a cylinder or a cracked block/head. But it could and most likely is just a head gasket.
I would hope they would pay 100% to fix it or ask for your money back and let them have the truck.
Welcome to FTE. I'm not sure how you can have milky sludge under the valve cover and not in the crank case. If the engine is really hydrolocked, it's not injector cups or o-rings, and it's not the oil cooler either.
Tell them to pull the glow plugs and roll the motor over with a breaker bar and see what fluid comes out which hole.
I HAD A F-350 WITH A 7.3 THAT LOST COOLANT TOO. THE HEADS HAVE A WATER PASSAGE AROUND THE INJECTORS. I HAD TO HAVE NEW SELEVES PUT IN DUE TO CRACKS IN THEM.
YOU MIGHT WANT TO CHECK THESE. HOPE THIS MIGHT HELP
yeah i dont know for sure what fluid hydrolocked it yet they will let me know in the morning what they find. if its something like sleeves or o rings on the injectors they are gonna fix it and ill keep the truck. if its a cracked block im gonna have to just say keep the truck and give me my 10k back
Looks like it's got a 4" exhaust and 6" tip on it. Wonder what kind of chip / programmer is in there. What else do you know about the truck? Got any photos under the hood?
Was told its a 3inch down pipe, 5 inch straight pipe to back and 8 inch tip. Has a programer but unsure of make. K&n cold air kit, new tires. Had a stack in the bed.
Any aftermarket gauges on the inside? I don't mean to come across as negative, but often times when we see a truck with a tuner, stacks and no gauges it's a sign it's been abused. That's not always 100% correct, but it's often a sign of someone who just bought a whole bunch of parts without knowing any better.
If it turns out to be something supposedly simple, before you take it back, do a simple check for compression. Start the engine and while it's at idle, unscrew the oil fill cap. Place your hand over the oil fill tube and see if you can feel any pressure. It doesn't really matter if you see smoke coming from the tube unless it's got a distinct puffing to it with some pressure behind it. Flip the oil cap upside down and lay it on the oil fill tube with the truck at idle. If the cap just vibrates around and slides off, things are good. If the cap is shot up into the air or knocked off the tube from the pressure, you need to tell them to do a compression check on the motor before you take it back.
It does have egt, boost, ttrans temp in a pillar pod.
Welcome to FTE.
You need to have them find out what chip/tuner that is on the truck. If it's a tuner, you need to have the programmer in hand in order to switch tunes.
If the dealer can't tell what tuner is in your truck, have them reprogram your PCM back to stock. Then come back here and we can help you get some safe tunes.
Are there any strange switches, ***** on the dash?
There is a **** on the dash that is hooked to the computer. I thought someone at the dealer told me some like a power command or something like that. I can't find any markings or documentation.
Yeah you should probably unplug that tuner. It seems like the person who had it before you romped on it a little too hard. Definitely take it back to the dealer and see what they can do. Its hard to blow a head gasket on a 7three or so I hear, hopefully its something minor that they can fix and have you on your way. Like it was said earlier, take out that chip so we can get you some lighter tunes for the truck.
got a bit of an update today. #8 was hydrolocked with coolant. they are investigating into it more. being fixed on the dealerships dime. no matter whats wrong with the truck. if it needs a motor they are putting one in, headgaskets, anything they are doing it.
