You're right, my apologies.

There are plenty of websites/stories about cutting and why and what to do.

Someone just needs to get with her and find out what happened, if she remembers.

I have always thought it was a need for attention . Not to minimize the act though. I have always wondered if it was real pain they wanted . The ones I have seen are not much more than scratches. Regardless , someone needs to get the child some help . The reasons vary & are complicated. MY step sister used to cut herself . She told me ( she was in treatment)not to worry till she started doing it the length of her arm , instead of across ....

Keith, .............Get your daughter away from this girl, have her disassociate herself from her.
The friend needs help only a professional can provide.

ok... ill throw in my two scents, me being 18 and all... i went to school around people like this. people who cut themselfs also go by "Emo's" or i just call them emotionally depressed. it is a fad amd there are plenty of people that do it. im guessing her friend dresses in dark clothes and gloomy makeup. but yes, cutting is a fad and done to either (like said before) get attention or to ease there depression some.

i went to school with a ton of these people and they are very unhappy people who cant take what life throws at them.

I wish I could, Dave!!!
This young lady is in the same dorm 'suite' that Megan lives in.
There's 6 young ladies in this 'suite', and apparently this one girl and my daughter have a class together, and they are becoming friends.

Meg and I were talking last night, and she's going to see and talk to one of the counselors after her 11:00 class gets out, to see what she can do/IF she can help.

I asked Megan right away if she was the one doing this.
I got an emphatic "No, Dad! That _ _ _ _ would hurt!"

I gotta be honest. . . . I had NO IDEA of what this 'cutting' was, until yesterday.
I guess I am a dumb, ole gray-haired fart!!

I literally laughed at this one....Big guffaws actually....

As for the girl, GET HER SOME HELP....Because, if she finds out that "Up the stream" works better than "Across the road"....It can cause some bad times....(Seriously)....

*As to my "terminology"...

#1-Major artery=HUGE blood loss...
#2-Not saying it CAN'T kill you, etc...But its a lot less as likely...

At any rate, self inflicted pain is a GOOD reson for a shrink......

^^^ Gotcha, Wes.

I knew that from my old days runnin' with the Rescue Squad.

I still can't grasp the idea of doing this.
I mean. . . . I've had my fair share (and then some!) of depression and anger/hurt, what-have-you,but!!!!!..... I've NEVER thought about cutting myself.

My daughter was right. That _ _ _ _ hurts!!
(I can remember when I was MUCH younger, and cut a stick, and had my thumb on the stick as I was cutting around. . . . . Yeeeeeeee-freaking-ooooooooch!!!)
Hey!!! I never said that I was smart!

This young lady is too young to be doin' that crap to herself. She's a very nice looking young lady, too, and too darned young to to be 'marking' her body like that.
It makes me angry, thinking about it.

May I simply add that I believe you should encourage your daughter to be proactive in the matter. You say they are becoming friends, and that is good, but being a friend and protecting her from herself may not be the same thing. I value my friendships enough to break the bonds of trust in order to save a life. Basically, I would hate to know your daughter became such a close friend to this troubled teen (I assume she's a teen) that she doesn't want to tell anyone else about the cutting for fear of losing the trust of a friend.

Depends on whether she is personally doing the cutting and not with a "design" in mind, or if a "professional artist" is doing it. If she is just cutting herself, there is a mental problem almost for sure. If she is making a pattern, then she is practicing Scarification, still questionable in my mind.

I still think either case is borderline nutjob, but I am probably getting into Old farthood.

A current fad is scarification, essentially an artist cuts the skin in a design pattern to create scars. I have even seen where they brand(burn) a design into the skin and then tatoo the raised scars for color. When ever I see one of these "Body Arts" I do a WTF, and try not to stare too hard. I'm barely OK with tatoos since you can't change your mind. Scarification goes way past tatoos.

Like I said I think this is nutcase anyway you look at it but there are "Professional Artists" offering such service.

What ever happened to just using those water tatoos we all had when we were kids?

As many have said...this young lady has some serious issues which require professional attention. Her suite mates need to support her and encourage her to get the help she so desperately needs.

thats like some of these people i see... with the gauges big enough to wrap around your head, or the lumps of stone they stick under peoples skin to make a design... and some of the peircings people do... the only ODD peircing i like is the corset peircing on the back on a female.

It's a drastic means of gaining attention.

But what is troubling about it is that when someone like Marilyn Manson popularises "Self Mutilation" it becomes a fad...

Pure self damage - all of it.

What makes it all the more confusing is when Religious people practice such - in the misguided notion that they are sharing the sacrifices of the Christ.

* See: "THE CODE" for an example of such self-flagellation

Pointless and stupid, in my opinion.

Becoming strong has nothing to do with that, regardless if it is physical strength or mental and spiritual

*If becoming strong in the spirit means destroying yourself - we have a descending spiral
