Serious question - ??????????

I have a serious question, that I need some help with, and understanding.

My youngest daughter says this is just a 'fad'. (My daughter is NOT into 'pain', so, I know she's not doing this!)

A friend of my daughter is 'cutting' herself.

What in the H E double hockey sticks is this!?!?!?!?!?!
What is 'wrong' with someone, to make them 'cut' themself, or, am I misunderstanding the whole meaning?????????
I'm hoping that I'm just an old fart, and misunderstanding what my 20 year old is saying!!!

I doubt you are misunderstanding what your daughter is telling you. Your daughters friend needs serious help before she really hurts herself. Self injury is usually a symptom of depression or possibly some sort of abuse. Causing yourself pain is using real pain to cover up an emotional pain that you don't want to or can't face.

+1

It's not normal, it's not a fad, and it should never be ignored. The girl has some very serious emotional issues and she needs to see a competent therapist. Whatever happened to her as a child must have been pretty awful.

This web page is directed towards someone who is harming themselves, but it appears to have some pretty good insight as to why someone would do this.

It's something idiots do for attention.

She thinks her life is "hard" and is cutting herself to "release" pain.

I've known several "cutters" and dated one. This was what I gathered.

My sympathy for someone who cuts themselves is zilch.

Please, enlighten me as to the excuses people have who cut themselves. I understand if there are actual medical issues that causes them to not reason properly or what have you, most don't fall into this category. Most think their life "sucks" and that cutting themselves "releases" the pain, or takes their mind off the emotional pain they are experiencing. When my Ex cut herself, it was for this reason or for attention. She was also nuts.

People cut as a COPING mechanism, because they cannot or have not learned to cope with the day to day life stresses that everyone faces at one point or another in their life, or they do it for attention

So, my original post still stands, guess I just dumbed it down too much?

The girl in the original post does need help, but so does everyone who does this loony bull.

So "several" acquaintances is a large enough sample size for you to determine that "most" are just idiots looking for attention?

Self-injury is a serious issue usually stemming from some mental disorder or trauma. It is often done in secret and morons like this are why people are afraid to come out and talk and deal with the issues. Cutting is often a cover for some very serious emotional trauma.

The girl in the original post needs help. Not some jackass calling her names.

Did you not read where I also said this?

I'm willing to bet his advice to people with manic depression is to "cheer up" and "stop making excuses".

I really do hope that you never have to understand the kind of emotional pain that leads someone to do this to themselves. It's clear here that you have absolutely no clue whatsoever.

Ok, we've de-railed the thread far enough. If we don't have anything constructive to add (this does not include arguing), then hit the back button.
