Hi : guys...Im new to this and I am new to the ford 7.3 hence my question?
I just bought a 1989 F350 1Ton dually with a deck on the back. I am going to use it for hauling an R.V.
Q: How hard is it to put a turbo on and how expensive is it, what would u guys recomend ? I do know how to wrench somewhat, more on older gas engines than desiels. Can u please help/advise thanks Kurt
Pretty easy install if you have all the parts. Locating correct parts if you buy a cheap used kit will become a nightmare. complete good condition kits typically go for around 1000. Especially if they are the wastegated banks and ats versions
Hey thanks for the reply,So I take it you would suggest getting all the parts from a junk yard or off a good used unit. Is there a guide or instructions I can download...?
Would I have to change anything in the Engine computer..?
or can I just bolt everything on...and It will work.
Thanks again for your help..
If you are looking for a bolt on kit with no chasing down extra parts, hypermax is the way to go. They sell the kits new and back them up pretty good too.

No engine computers in these. If you went to a JY you'd more than likely find a 93-94 idi with factory turbo somewhere (maybe). If it hasn't been picked apart then you be good to go. There are lists of part that are required floating around. Make sure u get a checklist if u do find any turbo for sale

you wish you went with hypermax's pulse type setup instead of banks wastegated now?

No way.
I was just saying if he wanted a new kit that he woulnt have to chase parts down for, hypermax is it.
If he goes ast or banks, he has to chase parts down and spend extra time. Ats doesnt support their kits anymore either if you just want to buy and bolt on, you cant.
oh.your talking about buying used of course then.cus banks sells the kits complete with every nut and bolt.
yeah,it is some work gathering parts lol.i think i still need some. most all the nuts and bolts, but that heat shield you showed me, i still need to order.i should keep gathering, cus i should be ready in a month or so hopefully once work dries up for the season.
nah.i just called them before buying my used kit to see if they'd sell me the kit minus the exhaust and the E40D trans command at a reduced rate.yup they would.but Jayme's deal was still so much better, even though i needed a few parts.i'll end up ahead even if she needs a rebuild really, but lets hope it doesn't need to come to that.
been calling them all along, ordering new missing parts.something i knew i couldn't do with ATS.wanted the wastegate style,so only banks option was left.plus all the good reviews of the banks power results compared to the others didn't hurt either.
anyone can call 'em right up tomorrow (sidewinder only though.they no longer sell the old non gated parts/turbo's) for a kit or parts.
