Just fired up my 89 f150 w/rebuilt 302. I went to go set the timing and my timing light flashes erradicatly. It's a brand new timing light. It seems to be missing flashes. Any ideas?
Just because the timing light is new does not mean it is good. Does the engine exhibit signs of misfiring? If not, you probably have a bad timing light.
I have the opposite problem. I put in a new dizzy into my rebuilt 351W and I can't get the timing light to go on. I think the timing is off too much. Will try the timing light on another car but pretty sure it works fine.

The biggest factor with the distributor is having free adjustment movement on both sides of number one. Try this, wrench the motor clockwise, stop at TDC. Install the distributor so as looking down in the distributor at the pickup, the rotor is on the right side of the pickup, in other words before and soon to pass...that's assuming the the rotor travels counter clockwise during operation, I did not look that up to see for sure, for the 351. It may take you a couple of times to find the right gear tooth position, that allows you to have the rotor at pre pickup alignment
