intake, air cleaner

Hey all,

i have a 1979 f100 custom with the 4.9L straight six.

right now it has a god awful looking (works well thought) intake setup.

was wondering what the best (and best looking) intake/filter combo for my motor would be without have to re-jet...etc..

thanks!!

You're talking about aftermarket intakes? Best looking is subjective, but a single 4-bbl intake is probably the best in terms of ease and performance. Maybe you have to rejet, maybe you don't. No way to know for sure until it's all bolted on and driven.

Well on mine the Offy intake puts the carb too close to the A/C plenum to use 14" filter so I had to get a cheapo smaller one. If I had my druthers I'd use a factory style breather. Your under-hood situation is probably different than mine.

My aftermarket one is too small and I can't find replacement elements. I was at the j/y today and noticed a lot of vehicles that have a intake tube that exits thru the rad. support wall, or the side fender. I think I am going to pull one and rig it up to put on my Qjet. The oem type actually quiets the sucking of air in the engine compartment. That's a plus.

F-250 restorer,

You mentioned that your aftermaket filter is too small and you can't find replacement elements... this won't address it being too small, but years ago, I had an aftermarket air filter and took the used filter element to the parts store and spent a little time looking through filter boxes and found one which matched up. Then, I looked up the number and determined which application that filter was specified for. From then on, I could purchase what ever brand filter I wanted as long as it was for that specification.

Thanks. I've already tried that. I found the correct diameter, but not thickness. After two hours the guy working there was getting annoyed at me opening boxes, so I gave up. I'm actually looking forward to using and oem filter and housing from another vehicle, with a cool air hose to the outside. I think I can clean it up, paint, or have a bit of chromed, and it will quiet down the sucking of air.

re: air filter dimensions

I realize this is probably waaaayyyy too late, but...

go to Baldwin Filters | Home, and use catalog 562. opens up as a pdf, probably in adobe....go to page 499 (click on first page number box, type in 499, hit enter)....will probably open on page 498--does in my browser. Page 499+ is listing of round air filters by dimensions (height=length) from short to tall...and outside and inner diameters inches and mm.
elsewhere on baldwin site, you can enter B's part number to get other manufacturer numbers.
