Synthetic Oil

Hey Excursion owners,

What is your opinion on using synthetic oil over dino oil?

The reason I am asking, I am considering changing over to sythetic in my 7.3 Ex with 309,000 miles.

What are the opinions? good or bad?

I dont have any history on the EX. I purchased it about 1.5 years ago with 285,000 miles and change the oil every 5,000 miles.

Thanks for the ideas.

Not necessary for you since you are in FL but if you were where it can get cold, it does help startup

My mine concern is the amount of mileage on the odometer. 309,000 miles. Is it anything to be concerned about?

i run that rotella t6, gets dirty just like the other oil, cost more money tho, and instantly made our excursion 7.3 quieter, very noticble over the dino oil.

Some have said it is thinner and helps contribute to more leaks. I ran it in my 98 4runner for a long time, then the rear main starting leaking. I don't know if the syn did it or not, it has 232k on it though.

no extra leaks for me with it in the 7.3, quieter might mean less wear. i think its worth it.

One of old wives tale is that synthetic is thinner and will cause leaks. This is even when the oil is replaced with the SAME weight. Another one has it that the oil will clean out the sludge which is holding back the leaks. I have switched cars over at higher mileages with no issues. Of course, one time I smoked a cigarette in front of my car and it refused to start so maybe smoking in front of a car is bad, IDK.

I'm glad to hear what I've "heard" is bunk - thanks for posting!

I don't think you'll see any noticeable mileage gain with synthetic oil, but it helps me sleep better at night, lol! But it's good stuff. I'm a rotella T6 user too.
