I have a nice C6 automatic steering column that I redid, but I've decided to go with a built up AOD behind my big block. Can I change internal parts of the column to get the one I have to work through the AOD gear range, or is it a completely different column? I don't have an AOD column in front of me to take apart, so I can't really see the differances...
Did they ever use an AOD behind a BBF? They have a hard enough time holding up behind a 351W unless it's built. A stock AOD wouldn't stand a snowball's chance. I have an extra column at home, I can dig it out later. I think the arm is the same, just the linkage/rod to the trans itself is different IIRC.

They never put one behind a big block from the factory AFAIK, but you can, and as long as you get it built to hold the power, it's fine (solid input shafts, etc). I know some people race BBF/AOD combos.
I don't think there is any difference in the column itself. Yes, the AOD was a 4 speed auto, but the gear selector still only 3 positions for the forward gears. Rather than the "PRND21" used for 3 speed autos like the C6, the AOD selector was "PRN*D1" *=OD. Since the indicator is actually in the dash, that's all that was different inside the truck's interior. The linkage and other underhood stuff could be different, though.
I don't think there is any difference in the columns, just in the indicator.........P-R-N-O/D-D-1 vs P-R-N-D-2-1 but the same number of positions, & so the same travel on the shifter. It definitely works.
I swapped an AOD out & put a C6 in, a few months ago & the column was no problem.
The only thing I did need to do (regarding this issue) was shorten the control arm on the C6 transmission about 15mm to match the length of the AOD arm.
Also the brackets that mount the linkage onto the side of the transmissions were slightly different, but it was a very minor problem to fix.
The linkages themselves were all the same otherwise.
PS - I see Rogue Wulff has beaten me to it as I typed!
