Help with a power/performance chip

Now, that I have fixes for my power locks and power mirrors (Thanks to you guys and this forum) I could uses some education about performance chips.
There is a chip installed in my newy purchased 01 truck F250 4wd 7.3 engine. I do not know anything about chips, where it is located or how they work. The previous owner said there are 3 positions to the chip. he never touched the selector in 7 years. If someone could direct me to a link I would really appriciate it.
After I come up to speed with this engine I hope I can pass the information on to other newbe's...

We need to know the make and model of your chip before we can be any help.

I guessed that.. There is no information in the truck about the chip.and I have on idea where is it located?

Most chips will be mounted on the PCM via the J3 connector, although yours is not likely a DP tuner, here should be some reference pictures.

Finally! A reasonable explanation. With pictures no less. I have been wondering for ages what anyone meant when they said the chip was mounted on the PCM.

I looked and looked at the PCM and could not see any where that a chip could be mounted.

Now I know how to removed the PCM and where to look for a chip.

Thanks ever so much for clearing that up for me. It really is important to me.

One thing to keep in mind, some folks say they have chipped the truck when what they have actually done is flashed the PCM with a programmer, similar in concept but different & inferior method, this is what a super chips, or edge, or hypertech, or SCT as well as others do, they should have a programmer module that plugs into the OBD port it should convey with the truck!
