I have a 1984 F-150 4.9 and the C4 is not long for this world. I'm thinking about a C6 to add overdrive. What I would like to know is do I need one specifically for a 4.9 or would any C6 do? Also, would I need any ancillary parts like cables? I would bet I would need to.modify or find a new driveshaft as well.
If you want OD, get an AOD from behind a 300 or SBF V8 from an '88 to '93 vehicle. (early models are trouble).
You need a TV cable and will probably have to fiddle with your shift linkage a bit.
All these transmissions have integral bell housings, so the trans must come from behind a 300 or 302/351w motor.
Thank you for the help and for clearing up some confusion on my part. That's pretty much what I needed to know. I thought about a manual swap but I don't wanna mess with the finding all the clutch stuff. I'm new to these trucks and I'm still searching auto to manual conversions. Do you think the O/D auto would be less time consuming or about the same?
AOD is almost the same length as the C4, so it might be a very basic bolt in to start with. IIRC, you need an AOD-specific flywheel, so double check that.
MT conversion requires clutch and brake pedal installation. If you like laying on your back in a cramped location for a couple hours and working at odd angles with crap falling in your eyes....you'll love that part of it.
I have had the displeasure of plenty of interior work. I hate it. I'm gonna have to do it anyways for this stupid throttle cable. There's no extra holes that need drilling or brackets that need to be made? Just a set of pedals? Are they cable clutches?
Your throttle cable from the pedal to the carb remains the same. It's from the carb to the trans that needs attention.
Clutch pedal installation starts with removing the existing brake pedal.
Yes, you would have to open up the firewall.
Hydraulic would be best for the clutch.
Are you going AT (AOD) or manual? IMO the AOD is the least amount of work.
Well then I better start looking for an AOD. Is the tranny cross member the same or would I have to modify or replace mine? As far as the throttle cable goes, I have to replace that because it broke and I have it stuck together with a butt connector until I can get the replacement ordered.
