I have an 88 Bronco w/351W and C-6. 3 speed. Is there any simple swap for a 4 speed auto or auto with overdrive? Something that will not require major modifications or messing with the computer too much.
yes, AOD from 87 to 92 f150 4x4/bronco they only were installed behind 302 and 300 I6. I say use 87 and later because of the upgrades. they are not computer controlled! i think your X-member is labled for both C6 and AOD. just make sure you get the shifting linkage and TV cable from the doner truck there is a difference. actually you can use the tv cable from a crown vic/merc grand marquis with the EFI 5.0. i'm going to do my friends 88 bronco. i've already done my dads 87 f150. One more important thing you need a flywheel from a 91 crown vic POLICE w/5.8L. they're about $75 from CARQUEST. ADVANCE AUTO carries them to.

Thank you for the information! I will start looking around for the trans and flywheel. I have another question though. Is there any place on line to find out what all of the codes on the vehicle mean? I know it has the C-6 and an 8.8" rear end. Where can I find out what the other codes means?
Also, is there any dis advantage to the AOD over the C-6? The owners ordered it specifically with the C-6 to pull a horse trailer. Is the AOD weaker or have a lower towing capacity?
The AOD is somewhat weaker than the C6 due to factory calibrations, but for everday use you'll have no problems. I would'nt recomend you towing 12000lb farm empliments everyday, you can safely pull 8000lbs. NEVER TOW IN OD.also be carefull of your tire size! if you have a 3.55 rear i would go no larger than 33" ! look on line there are several sites that will explain the VIN codes, there are probably a few people in FTE here who know the VIN codes. i dont know of any right off the top of my head.the easiest way to tell if the truck has a AOD is to look at the shift selector .
it will look like this ---> [P R N (D) D 1]
if there is no selector you'll have to look under the vehicle at the transmission
pan if you see a square pan that lookes like a 9"x9" cake pan with the word (METRIC) that is a AOD. becareful the E4OD came out in '89, the selector will look like the one for your C6 [P R N D 2 1] the pan is almost twice the size of the one in the AOD. hope this helps...

I thought early 302's had a 28 oz flexplate. Can't remember though, just a double check.
Erik
yes they did! from what i read it was in '81/'82 they swapped the 302 to the 50oz wgt. I assume it had something to do with running the AOD itself! The AOD has a different flywheel from the c4 & c6, it is stamped out differently.
