cold start thermal video

I just filmed this video showing a cold start of my engine. Video starts with key off. I started in visual spectrum for a quick regular view then switched to the FLIR camera. Thermal mode is "fire/ice" which is standard white-hot except things that are relatively extra cool show up as blue and extra hot shows as red.

Video quality isn't the best because I used a video camera pointed at the video output screen.

Excellent idea, recording the video that way.
What surprised me the most is the CAC tubes never showed any heat.
And the HPOP was warming up faster than the engine itself. That little bugger really does a workout in it's normal routine.
Reps sent.

Neat! That alternator looks like it doesn't take long to heat up!

My alternator is often the last thing to cool off. Changing front shocks the other day, it actually startled me that the case was too warm to lean on, yet the exhaust manifold had cooled to the point that bumping it with my hand was no problem.

Sounds like my engine, too, with that one tappy cylinder, especially at higher RPM.

What do you think is making the tappy sound in your (and my) engine? Mine seems to come and go and sound less tappy after engine warms up.

lol..i leaned up into the speaker to hear if the motor "tapped". Think its a "common" sound for these motors, anymore...#8?

I lowered my fuel pressure and the noise/tapping, lessened as well.

Don't know history prior to 140K miles, was stock though. I assume it has original injectors with the #8. I'll be adding a fuel pressure gauge in within the next few days. Thanks for the tip on lowering FP.

I'm assuming a slowly failing injector. If I rev it up to about 1600 in Park, the truck shakes like a missing cylinder. 1500-1750 RPMs seem to be the sweet spot where it is most evident. Mine doesn't go away once warmed up.

I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on an AE scanner, possibly even tomorrow.

Sounds likely. Good call on the AE, interested to read your results.

With any luck, might have it Saturday (priority mail). Just got off the phone with Clay and he's shootin' it out the door today. Forgot I was ordering it until after I filled the truck up and didn't leave enough room on the CC to spring for overnight shipping.
