7.3 Running odd

Over the past couple of weeks my truck has been idling rough intermittently. Sometimes I'd be driving down the road and you could feel it start bucking. Sometimes when you first start it, the CEL would come on, turn it off and restart it and it would go off. Here recently it would just die. Checked and replaced both batteries this morning. That seemed to fix it for a while. Then she up and died. Any suggestions? I need help badly.

Sound like a CPS but I'm not sure if it would set a CEL

Update.....
After replacing the batteries, the CEL has not come back on. Even after dying and all the bucking it has done today.
Here is what it has done or is still doing. It died while I was driving down the road and it is bucking really hard.
I just bought a new CPS, but that will have to wait until the engine cools. The guy at the parts store said it could be a fuel pressure problem. How do I go about checking the fuel pressure and what should it be?

Schraeder valve on the FPR. Should be between 55-75 psi @ idle

It sounds like a CPS problem to me.

Just replaced the CPS yesterday morning for similar symptoms.

Performed the work from below. From the top was very tight and I didn't have time to figure out how to get the serpentine belt off, much less back on correctly!

Took me 30 minutes this time. Will take me 3 minutes the next.

I'm not confident this fixed my problem, by as this was the first service I've done other that add diesel to the tanks, it has boosted my PSD wrenching confidence!!

That sounds very similiar to what my truck is doing. When I first start the truck up it will buck going down the road and even die. When I start it back up it smokes really bad and acts like it will not take fuel or isn't getting any fuel. After a few minutes it will stop smoking and start reving clean again. After the truck warms up it runs perfect again. I was wondering about oil pressure in the high pressure pump. My guage shows pressure, but I don't know about the high pressure. I still can't understand the smoking though.

Update...Replaced the CPS. Truck smoothed out a lot. The bucking is still present, however, it only does it every once in a while now. Not throwing any codes. Checked fuel pressure and I'm getting 50-55 psi at idle. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
And thanks for allof the input so far.
