So Saturday I went up to the gas station to top off the truck and fill up the gas cans. Upon filling up the fuel neck I noticed it was bubbling RED... Crap! I turned around to look at the pump, and what does it say... OFF Road! :O
I never thought I would ever hope that my truck would get 5 mpg! I want this tank gone!
I've done that a few times while working in Oklahoma you guys have a lot of Off road diesel at the pump. I honestly wouldn't worry about it unless your truck has DOT stickers on it or you spend a lot of time at the livestock sale barn. That's the only place I've heard of pick ups getting dipped. Honestly if you wanna get rid of the red color just run that tank dry dump 5 gal of used oil in the tank top off with green diesel and you'll be fine. Just make sure it's clean used oil. Good luck.
No use worrying over spilled milk. I seriously doubt if you were to be pulled for testing they would pull your filters. They would just siphon a little fuel out of the tank to check for color. As long as it came out the normal golden color (or at least not red), you're fine.
As far as dying the tank, I do know it leaves a red tint. However, in the months following Katrina/Rita, the use of red dyed fuel was temporarily approved for use in my neck of the woods because production of diesel was severely reduced and it was necessary to prevent a severe shortage. I got several tank fulls of the red dyed stuff through my normal station. However, I paid the normal highway use price. I didn't notice any difference in the power or operation of my truck.
That being said it will stain the filters but you stated that you were going to change them out. Personally, I would own up to it and pay the man, than have an ounce of doubt...
I will change the filters, that's not a big deal. If its as simple as paying the difference of what I would have paid for green fuel, I am all over that. I think it would be a whole $6.00.
BTW- If I have a 38 gal tank, and only put 20 gal in. Wouldn't the red dye be fairly diluted?

The dye is "designed" to tint the fuel for several tanks following the cheap stuff. In theroy if you get "dipped" two tanks later the dye could still be present enough to tint what's in the tank. The tint won't be as bright as straight off-road diesel, but the tint will be there. Unless your due for a filter change, I wouldn't waste the money replacing 'em. But then I'm cheap.
In a former career I was a tonka toy hauling steering wheel holder. I got in to a "tight spot" one day going into a job site, the way the truck was pointed all the fuel had moved away from the pick-up tube (had a little over a 1/4 tank). The job boss came out with his truck & dumped 40 gallons into the tank to get me off the only road in/out of the place. It took me 4-5 fill-ups to burn all that dye out. You want to talk about a nervous guy...this truck had two 150 tanks.

Thanks Z, I would have never guessed it would stick around that long... That dye is no joke!!
