I recently had the heads pulled off mine (valve job and extracted two broken off glow plugs), while they were off, I had the garage replace the oil cooler gaskets at the same time. Everything back together now and the oil cooler leaks like crazy. How difficult is the repair? Since they replaced the gaskets and now it leaks, does that mean I need a new cooler or did the garage screw-up the gasket installation?
I provided them with a felpro gasket set that had two cork gaskets and (I think) three o-rings? I looked at the engine when I got the truck back and I could tell they were replaced or at least there was new ATV around the perimeter where it bolts to the engine block. It looks like the leak is around the cylindrical part between the front of the engine and the oil filter.
There is 4 big o-rings (6 if you have the old style like me) A rubber mallet or soft faced deadblow hamer and a heavy pick will do. When i pulled mine out to do head gaskets I put slight pressure on to see how flexible the old ones were and each quickly shattered into about 20 pieces. Make sure you install the outer o ring on the bundle to avoid cutting it when you tap it back together. After I did mine I ran just strait water in it for a week just incase i had a leak.
If they used silicone on the gaskets just plan on redoing the whole thing, you CANNOT use rtv on those gaskets. High tack to glue them down or install dry. I have gaskets and orings on hand 23.00 a set shipped if you need.
And cork definately cant be used there.
