I have removed both of my fuel tanks and want to install one 38 gal rear tank Has anyone purchased one of these and if so what was the quality and where did you purchase? I am doing this to make room for headers and dual exhaust.
Tony
There was thread recently about an FTE'er who installed one of them 38 ga tanks and suffered a puncture only a days after its installation. Since it is basically twice as deep as 19 gal verison, I made the recommendation to fabricate and install an aluminum shield to reduce the possibility of a puncture... all sorts of strange stuff ends up on the road these days - ladders, scrap lumber, and the other day here in CA - a weed eater!
I saw this post from the other day. I think planning on a shield when installing a large tank would be a good idea. A couple of brackets and a sheet of steel could prevent accidental damage, but I've never seen a 38gal rear tank in person... So I don't know how low they hang.
That was my fuel tank that ruptured. I'm not sure if something came up and hit it, or if there wsa a manufacturing defect. I am happy to report that when I called LMC Truck today, they told me to send them some pictures and they would replace the tank, which I was very happy to hear. Hopefully it was just a freak occurence, though I do like the suggestion of putting some kind of shield in place.
The bigger tank takes up the space where the spare tire would normally go, so you need to find another spot for that. I was happy with having the big tank (until it broke). :-)

Hey Frank
I am going to buy mine from LMC also, does it seem to be made from the same gauge steel as the tank you took out? Did you notice if it was made by Spectra? Also how was the mounting hardware they supplied?
