I am going to be replacing my fuel tank on my 1990 F250 (Rear tank) and I keep running into 3 different tanks available, a 16, 18, or 19 gallon. I tried to check through my VIN which tank I have, and I cannot tell. How do I tell? I tried a search and it brought up lots of good stuff, but not quite what I was looking for. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
my 1991 has a 19 gal. in the rear. IMHO, i would go with a larger tank. Transfer Flow Inc. seems to be the "go to" place for tanks on this forum. go here: http://www.transferflow.com/html/for...uel_tanks.html
if you have a spare tire under the truck, go with the 31 gallon, your spare will have to be lowered 4 inches. if you don't have a spare (or it's not under your truck), you can get a 45 gallon tank. someday, when i have the money, i will be getting a 31 gallon.
good luck
19 gallon is the standard rear tank. The 16 gallon is the front tank for shortbed (and shortbed kingcab) trucks. The 18 gallon tank is the front tank on longbed trucks.
There are some oddball rear tanks that came on F250's, 350's, and 450's that were delivered without beds. These were meant for toolbeds, flatbeds and such that would be added by the customer.
I've noticed that vendors are now carrying direct replacement tanks made of plastic for most Ford trucks. A very good idea. No more rusty tanks-ever. And they are priced almost the same as the metal ones. And as mentioned above, the rear ones can be had in larger sizes if you want.
I would think it would be a 19 gallon, the way the guy explained it to me at the parts store was shortbed was a small tank and long bed was a big tank, and if it had the small tank and you wanted the big one, just to buy the big tank straps, but my f-150 turned out to have two 19 gallon tanks, or 18's or something, even though my 19 galon front tank holds just shy of 21 gallons??
I guess it will the 19 gallon tank. I havn't checked out that link yet, equium, but I am sure thats where I will get it from. The way fuel prices are, I would hate to have a 38 gallon tank and have to pay that tab. Thanks a million guys, I will let you know how the replacement goes if I don't blow myself up, lol.
Well, no explosions. Turns out it was an 18 gallon tank that was the "oem" replacement. All went well, until I realized that I broke the outlet hose end. Now to remedy that. Any suggestions? I was thinking maybe just removing the fitting with the little clip and just using a regular hose clamp. No sure yet.
theres a company called "HELP" they have the hose your lookin for, with end(s) any autoparts store will have it, they make hard to find things, handles fuel lines small little things that break, they got some good stuff.
