Anyone know how to test a Tach to see if it's the gage or something else?
1992 F250 460ci FI
With ignition off gage reads "0", with ignition on Reads "0" ( engine not running). With engine running reads "2500" steady. (No movement)
Where do I start looking?
I think it's wired right, because it was working fine and then quit. It's acting like a broken wire, maybe? What should the voltage be at the tach? Maybe the tach it self went bad?
Thanks for your help
Going off those symptoms, it's either seeing a constant steady signal on the tach signal wire when the engine is running (like it is hooked up to a ground instead of the negative side of the coil) or the tach itself has failed. What tach are we dealing with, and how did you wire it?
The 1992 460ci engine, distributor, control module and tach are all original "Ford" Everything was working fine for a year or more and all of a sudden the tach stays steady at 2500.
When running everything else is fine. If I pull the wire on the tach, should there be a pulse or constant voltage? Or is there an easier way to chech the tach itself?
Thanks
The signal wire is a pulse of open/closed cuircit
If it was working
And quit. It's likely the tach
I can't imagine the wiring failing in that manner. Seems like if the wiring came disconnected it woul stay at 0
I could be wrong
You said it worked for about a year. Is that how long you've had the truck or did you replace the tach a year ago?
Well its kinda nice to see some one is having the same problem as I am.
I have a '92 f 150 with the 5.8 and the E4od tranny. Everything was working fine untill yesterday I went out and started it and the tach went up to the 2500 mark, that is where it stays and now my tranny is shifting hard and the cruise works now and then. Everything in my dash is stock and I don't think it has ever been apart.
Could it be that the tach connection has gone bad on the back of the cluster or is it a warning of something else?
I am not trying to jump in and take the thread just having the same issues.
NWF150,
Sounds like something common to both the PSOM and the Tachometer at the cluster.
But they use different fuses and grounds in the cab.
So my guess is a bad body ground near the battery.
Did you replace the battery cables?
Does the fuel gauge work?
Did you replace the cluster?
Try putting a Ignition Dwell/Tachometer/Voltmeter Analyzer Test Instrument on the Tachometer wire at the Cluster. It is a White wire with a Pink stripe #648.
I think you have the same problem as mine. I feel it is in that circuit for the tach and transmission and cruise (same fuse for that cluster) Subford has a good idea. I am going to try that. Everything else works great except the tach. I hadn't thought about the ground being coroded or loose. I'm on the hunt with new ideas.
Thanks
Good idea I will check it out. I pulled the cluster out and cleaned everything the connections in the back of my cluster are a different color, mine are red instead of green, is this aftermarket?
Everything in my cluster works all gauges and lights.
I havent changed anything electrical in the truck since I got it in feb.
I will be cleaning all battery connections and see if that fixes the issue.
THANK YOU FOR ALL THE HELP, I WOULD BE LOST IF IT WAS NOT FOR THIS SITE.
Grrrrrrrrr, Frick and frack. Not sure whats happening Did a self test both running and not. No codes at all PSOM I changed out and nothing changed, changed the tach and no different. gone through the whole engine bay looking for loose wires and grounds to no avail. this cheap truck is going to drive nuts. just frustrated. have a whole new cluster comming should be here in the next day or so.
