Edge Insight a Torqueshift Killer?!

Back in August I bought from a friend, who upgrade to an Edge Insight CTS, an Edge Insight with Attitude.

In another thread posted yesterday the OP was asking about the maximum boost alert setting for his edge. A poster replying these questions made the statement that "the Edge Insight is a Torqueshift killer."

Now, this is the first I have heard of this, and if this unit if going to screw up my truck it is coming out and I am out a few hundred bucks.

Would some one please fill me in on this (Torqueshift Killer) statement.

Eric

Typically the torqshift killers are the modules that don't tune/flash the transmission, i.e. the shift on the fly modules. That's because the power level is adjusted up and down without the TCM being able to learn the different power levels and it kills the transmission. I'm not familiar with your particular tuner however I know Bill at PHP can convert some Edge programming.

There are three settings that I saw when I looked. Periodic, always on and off. My current setting is always. I hope that is correct or the best setting.

If that's what you have, then you have one of the infamous "tranny killers". Now does it happen all the time? No. However, do you want to role the dice and see if you are lucky or not?

PHP's tuner is the Edge Evolution converted to be able to take custom tunes. That tuner does not allow for shift on the fly. Better then their modules, but not as good as custom (the factory Evolution, not PHP's version of it).

Shift on the fly is a novelty that wears off after a time and it does more harm then good more often then not. For the reason that Partsman stated.

Edge is just more well known, spent more on ads and in general has a very good marketing plan in place.

Wonderful. I do not change driving strategies with this unit with exception of going to the tow setting when I am pulling my fifth wheel. It is normally set to 3-Drive. It has 1-Mileage, 2-Towing, 3-Driving, 4-Racing, 5-Extreme.

I was initially interested in it only for the ability to read critical items such as EOT,ECT, Transmission Temp, and EGT as well as read codes if they were present.

I wasn't and am still not interested in playing with, or manipulating systems in the truck.

If the Edge is left in 3-Drive, with the transmission learning left to "always", does that minimize the potential for problems? Or maybe a better question is, when referring to "shift on the fly" is that referring going from the different settings, 1-5, while in motion? If so, I think I would understand why there have been issues damaging the transmission.

I guess for my particular situation, as I mentioned before, I use two settings, Drive and Towing. I do not, and have not changed settings while driving. Before I tow, before starting the truck, I have switched into towing. After reaching my destination and unhitching, while in park, I will switch out of Towing back to Drive.

I guess I need to better understand what the Edge is doing for those modes. For example, in Towing, does it Learn and store how the transmission is shifting so that later when Towing is selected again the PCM/Edge is using that data? Or does it go back to square one for learning?

I'd really like to know what the risks are and what causes them to be risks.

Eric

The thing is, your TCM isn't learning the tune period at all, even if you do not change the settings. The reason being is that modules do not really tune in the first place. They intercept the signals, modify the signals and send them back to the various modules. They "trick" the computer into "seeing" readings that aren't true and that "forces" the PCM to make changes and those changes get the desired HP/TQ output depending on the setting that you have it in.

Not the safest way to make power that's for sure. At least not in my opinion.

What you are describing sounds like the Edge Juice with Attitude. Not the Edge Insight.

The Insight is just a monitor. The Juice is one of the shift on the fly "programmers" that seems to cause the problems. I say "programmer" in quotes because it doesn't program anything, it intercepts signals from the engines sensors, modifies them and passes them onto the PCM, thus fooling the PCM into doing things to add power.

You could use the Juice with Attitude for just a monitor by keeping on position 0, as far as I know. 0 is "stock" so it should not actually do anything.

I had that one. Had it on extreme. Dead stopped floored it. Bye bye tranny it has about 208,000 miles.

I now have the edge evo, no shift on the fly, I can adjust all the transmission settings and points.

I have it on the max setting all the time unless I tow something.

I also use it to monitor ect eot batt voltage and tranny temp

I found that I can reset the defaults, put in the EGT cool down temp setting and select 0. I am good with that. Thanks for the inputs! Good conversation and info as always. Eric
