Ok, so I have a brand new 2011 F150 SCrew EB direct from the factory. It's about a week or so old and I have almost 700 miles on it. It is garaged all the time while at home...
So I was looking under the front end just checking things out...getting to "know" my new truck (which by the way I love) and everything looks new and great underneath...nice new painted surfaces...metal etc until I see...the knuckles behind each of the front wheels are starting to rust. I'm assuming these are cast iron but why would they not paint these?! I mean, everything else is painted and looks great but then you see the rusting knuckles underneath?? AM I missing something here...is this normal? For all of you who own the same truck, have you seen the same thing?
It's normal. Happens on any new vehicle and Ford hasn't painted those knuckles, ever, if my memory is correct...check out the new SuperDuties...same thing. Just a bit of surface rust, not a major concern but is a slight eye-sore.
I took my wheels off, and painted the knuckles by hand with rustoleum satin black. They look better now.
I just did this last weekend. I also painted the front drive shaft, brake calipers and the hubs on the rotors. I also painted the whole rear axle housing. There were some areas on the rear end housing that were coated good and other areas that barely had any paint. So I painted the whole thing before surface rust started developing on the thin spots.
What about undercoating the vehicle? Do dealers offer this for $$$ or what about an after market company like Line X?
Salt air is a killer where I am and I'd like to take care of the underside of the new truck......short of doing it myself. Test drove two yesterday and narrowing the options down.
Don't go out and buy a "new" skid loader, they keep them outside from about an hour after being built till the dealer sells it to you. My brand new Bobcat with 3 hours on it had surface rust in all the nooks and crannies. I had a Dodge PU once that had not only rust but 6 oz of water in each of the body mounting tubes, nice. Chris
