4x4 question

I've been wondering, what exactly is the difference between 4x4 and AWD? is AWD just something the "upscale" luxuary car people use to get away from the 4x4 truck image?

4x4 question

all wheel drive transfer cases differ a little. First off they don't have 4 low range in them. Secondly...they differentiate between front and rear so you don't get that difficulty turning. They also usually transfer 60percent of the torque to the rear 40 to the front...or something similar to that.

Also, they have a differential in the middle of the power-train so that you can have 4 wheels being used, no matter what surface. Our 4wd systems are not to be used on paved roads or similar, because there is no mechanism in the power-train to keep the front and rear axles from binding. The front and rear wheels spin at different speeds, our 4wd system basically locks the front and rear together, there's no slipping. To alleviate the binding, the tires must be able to spin on a low-traction surface.

4x4 question

This is my opinion. Who needs AWD, in normal conditions, why would you need it? Makes absolutely no sense.

AWD--wimpy (waste of money)
4x4--the real stuff

It spreads the power out to all 4 wheels, giving you better traction & handling in ALL conditions. Why do you think the Porsche 959 & 911 Quad were developed? Plus, with the flick of a switch, an AWD can become a 4WD by locking the center diff, like Land Rovers do.

Of course, most AWDs suck anyway.

And yes, the only difference is the differential in the t-case.
