Going to do the first oil change. Does anybody have an opinion on Royal Purple? Thinking of running the 15w-40. Going to change both fuel filters while Im at it, Already changed the air filter.
This thread will be four pages long by the end of the week. Your choice in oil is sort of like your choice in underwear style/brand. Some guys will swear by a 5W40 or even 0W40 synthetic oil; others will say 15W40 dino works just fine. It's a matter of choice and where you live. If it gets below 0F, then most definitively I'd put allot of thought into the 5W40. If you live in South Texas or South Florida, the 15W40 maybe what works best for you.
I run Mystic synthetic blend (JT8) in my truck and have for 4 years/80k miles now. It's happy, I'm happy and that's all that matter to me. To each their own.
This !!! Dont know / understand about the cold but I run it all year in Va. (100's in Aug. / teens in Feb.) and all points in between.
Not sure what your saying/asking...but here's my stab at it. Oil with a 15W40 will have a higher viscosity (thicker) at it's cold state than 5W40. They'll both act the same at full operating temperature...they'll act like a normal 40 weight oil. Where this matters with the 6.0L is it uses the oil to "fire" the injectors via spool valves on the top of the injectors. If the oil is too think, the valves will have a heck of a time moving to inject the fuel in to the cylinders. Thus when guys say they have a rough idle when cold (especially below 40F-ish) it could be the oil is too thick for the spool valves.
Yes, these engines are that picky; but look at the power they make in trade.

I was just agreeing about the Rotella.... I run the 5w all year long , seems to do ok for me.
Thanks gentlemen! Yes there seems to be a lot of information on the oil... I used the Royal Purple 15W-40 syn. All OEM filters. Had the mechanic do the allover check and truck is in great shape. I live in southern California and it is a very moderate climate. I think I'll be fine. Thanks for the input..

I'm in the Riverside area and watch for sales. The best normal price for syn. is the Rotella T-6 at walmart. Napa gets the premium blue syn. on sale every now and then for 17.95 a gal. API CJ-4 rating means your good to go.
