Good luck finding DMV employees who know what they are doing.
I have CDL with endorsement for towing heavy trailers. No CHP officer can understand it.

You guys really think that some state run test is going to make these people better drivers? Let me know if you see the number of bad drivers out there drop because of this. I'll just keep funneling money to a bankrupt state to pay for crap like this.

What it does is it stops the 70 year old guy in retirement from going out, buying a giant RV trailer and cruising with NO experience. Which does happen and its scary.

The endorsement doesn't cost $100 or $50. I think it costs $26. That's the moral fee for taking any kind of test (as of the last time I was about a year ago.)

Its there to prevent Joe Public (or in the case of California, Jose Public) from going out and getting a giant trailer with no prior knowledge.

I heard, along the same lines as what Trey posted, but back when the economy/housing was at its peak, people were then refinancing, and out getting the biggest/baddest truck/trailer combo, to tow there 50G+ desert/water toys..(not all, but Glamis sure went and got itself in a hurry).

Like virtually ANY "license", the purpose is to put the citizen into the position where he cannot legally use the excuse "I didn't know".

Whether it's driving, contracting, refrigerant, etc, virtually all those tests involve primarily LAW, not the practical application of what's being licensed.

It's so they can FINE you. You shoulda' known, and have no excuse for not!

You'll be 70 someday. Then what are you going to say! I'm not 70 yet but I know alot of 70 year olds that are healthy and I bet have way more experience then you. Lets not get into a pissing game, I know where you are going but I've been doing this kind of out door activity all my life and am not going to stop if I am able, and healthy enough to do so.

I've had my Class A non-commercial license for just over 3 years now. A medical exam is required and a physician must sign the exam paperwork. Here is the link for the DMV page which has a link to the required DL-51 form: Medical Examination Report DL 51

I've been pulled over twice while towing and neither CHP officer asked for my license. Just gave me a warning and I went on my way.

Yeah, I think it might make some people better drivers. If half of the driver's that tow large 5th wheels get the endorsement, and half of those learn something valuable and half of those actually begin to drive more sensibly as a result....then it all will be worth it in my book.

I know I learned a few things in the process of studying for my CDL that I would not have otherwise known.

Nothing is fool proof and no amount of regulations is going to fix stupid. Best we can hope for is to educate the willing and improve safety on the road.

Ditto. When I studied for my CDL I learned a lot of little things that really every driver should know. They are small things but when added up make the road safer! I drive my F250 like I would drive a Class A truck. I turn wide, accelerate smooth, turn wide (with in my lane) check blind spots RELIGIOUSLY, I even find my self letting off the throttle at shift points. It amazes me how some of these people get a license... I think there should be a required refresher course every x number of years. A drivers license is (to the best of my knowledge) the only license you dont have to maintain. A doctor has to maintain his license, a pilot has to maintain his license, I have to maintain my EMT license etc.

So you may argue "Yeah but those are professionals! Not normal people." My counter argument is; Driving is the most dangerous mode of transportation. Flying isnt, becuase they are professionals. Maybe everyone should be a professional when driving.

Me and my daughter play "sign" games, as to what road/s i cant take my truck down ,since its over the weight...

I've learned the "drive defensive" style, along with the 4sec cushion, for a possible "out".

Some people just shouldn't be allowed to drive at all.

I swear, I wish it were legal to have a roof mounted 50 cal with a heads-up display for my truck. Or better yet, an EMP gun so I can just disable the offenders vehicle so they have to pull over.

You guys make some valid points about "people learning stuff" from the licensing requirements. I think that bad drivers are bad drivers. People who take the personal responsibility to learn are not going to be helped out by another government license. People who do not take responsibility for their actions will drive just the same and not care about any license they had to get.

just my little libertarian rant.

That's it...that is the majority of what I want, for people to have been certified that they have been exposed to the regulations concerning the safe operation of the equipment they drive on the public highways. The police have the responsibility to enforce the regulations, the operator can OR decide to not to obey the regulations...but if they don't obey they pay the price for their refusal. They can't claim "I didn't know!" I would also like to see them be given a rudimentary driving exam (one time) for the combination that they want to drive. Secondly, I want them to undergo bi-annual physicals like I have to. I want to know that they meet the minimum physical condition to operate a towed or driven vehicle exceeding say 30' or so.

OT...Not sure about the rest of the states, but here in CA, your aloud 4-points on your record. Well, i think that consist of a "normal" time in driving consisting of 10-15k a year. Well, my arguement is this..what about the drivers that drive for a living, that dont have to leave the states, or drive for a living ,for a small business, that puts 20-30k miles a year. Wheres the "fulcrum" in this equation.
