Check engine light????

Well, I'm new to this Forum and I am glad it is here. I am also new to this 2008 F-350 I bought recently. Without talking about this mileage this thing gets, let me say that it runs great and has more power than any other truck I have ever owned......including two other diesels.
My question right now is that my "check engine light" came on as I was coming home from my recent hunting trip. I know you cannot tell me what might have caused this.........but I don't want to take it to the dealer and pay $100.+ to have them tell me it is low on windshield washer fluid!! How can I get the error codes from the computer??? Can some of the parts stores read these codes?? I used to be able to read error codes 20 years ago by turning key on three times and it would flash numbers relating to a specific error codes......probably those days are gone. If you can help me, I would appreciate it.
PS. Truck has 48,000 miles on it.

Any mods on the truck?

Generic codes can probably still be read.

Be sure you check all your fluids before you take it in if you do and that will prevent that issue.

Be sure you drain your fuel/water separator too. Monthly at least.

Dealer won't charge you anything, the $100 fee is a thing of the past now and you are still well under warranty. Take it in before something major might happen to it.

A lot of auto parts stores will lend you a code scanner for free with a refundable credit card deposit. My local Autozone does it

You could also use the $100 and purchase a descent scanner if you would like to have one of your own for use on any other OBDII port vehicles.
