well my first car was a 1965 malibu that i worked on for 10 years then i got a 95 silverado lifted but was only V6 only reason i got that was cuz my brother gave it to me to drive while i played with my car.
then i realized i need something more saver and realiable since i have 2 kida 2 yr old and 9 months so i sold the chevy about 1.5 years ago then sold the 65 about about 3 months ago and since the 90 f250/350 came out i fell in love with the so 2 days after i sold the 65 i bought a 95 F350 CC LB 7.5L. well needless to say it was a peice of **** so after about a month working on that i went to trade it in and got that BAD M-FER i got now. price was right and i figured i wouldnt have to worry about not being able to tow something if i got this

My thinking was about the same. I had noticed that when you get all the options there's sometimes very little payload left, so I got a dually. If you're gonna get a dually, you might as well get some hp. Don't use it all that much and can't stand the smell of diesel, so I backed into the V10. Dumb luck, frankly. Like when I bailed out of the stock market with my 401(k) just before the crash. No good reason, just damned lucky!
We wanted a travel trailer and discovered that neither one of our 3 vehicles could tow one safely (98 Camry, 01 4Runner, and 07 Sienna). All Toyotas. Even light trailers was marginal and didn't have all the bells and whistles we wanted. Plus they went for $27k.
Idea came up to get a used tow vehicle that can tow heavier trailers to open up our options. We wanted an SUV and friends told me that Ford makes the best trucks. I went for the biggest SUV ever produced...the Excursion. Originally wanted a diesel, but the used car lot had a V10 version at a great price. Test drove it and bought it that night.
Overall the cost of the Ex and trailer was about the same as that new light weight trailer. The good thing is if I wanted to upgrade the trailer, I won't be stuck with only lightweights.
I would have gotten a Toyota, but they don't make a 3/4 ton truck or SUV in gas or diesel...at least not here in the US.
Now I have the V10 and do not regret it one bit. Very impressed with what it can do.
I have had both a older 2002 V10 and a 1999 Dodge Diesel. Sold both of them years ago. Both were reliable. Went a few years without a truck. Time came to buy again. The diesel was expensive to maintain. So for what I do I did not want to spend the money, not only upfront $7000 extra, plus for maintence. I looked around found a brand new 2009 V10 that just sat on the lot. I bought it new in feb of 2010. They gave me 10K off because of GAS was/is high and they had all their 2010 models to sell off as well.
I am really happy with the V10. Does what ever I need it to do. Shoot all I really need is a 1/2 ton truck but I really like the Super Duties.

My dad bought a brand new 99' with the V10 (which I talked him into, he was going to get the 5.4l) and traded the 99' in on a new 03' with V10 in 02'. In 2004 I figured it was time to look for a new truck for myself and retire my 74' before it ended up getting in a an accident or something.
I was going to get a 150 (really wanted a 250 V10) because the 150 suited my needs better at the time. The 150 was priced at $33k, which was a fully loaded FX4 reg cab 5.4l. The dealer that I was at looking at the 150 was a real ***** and pissed me off so I left. Once I left that dealer I drove about 15 miles to another FORD dealer. They had two V10 F-250 SC SD 4X4 one green and one red. They were both equipped the same and were very close to what I wanted. (just no keyless entry or 4.30 gears)
My dad had no problems with his V10s, I didn't want the base 5.4l because it was down on power and the 6.0l already had the reputation of being the biggest POS diesel Ford ever put in a truck. I could have ordered a new 05' but it would have been around $8k more and I don't buy first year trucks. Got $5800 off the green 04' V10 which took it down around $32k out the door and never looked back. Still have the 04' its paid for and I'm still happy with it. Thus far the only thing that failed on the truck has been the headlight switch **** which broke.(Only a $15 item. Turns I'm pulling and doing things I thought I wouldn't have been back in 04'. The 150 I was looking at would have been too small.
i work construction and do contracting. back when i got into Ford trucks i had a few IDI diesel trucks and then a '99 SD PSD. i loved the SD but it was a MI truck when i got it and i live in the Ohio snow belt. translation: my SD turned into a bondo buggy. i also ended up getting a 8'x16' enclosed trailer, so didnt need the pickup bed as much.
i decided on an Excursion as my work truck. SD chassis, 8' enclosed bed when i need it, seats for 8 when i need that, and plenty of towing capacity.
now for how i got into a V10. good diesels cost a lot to buy and aren't cheap to maintain as they age. V10s not so much. i ended up selling my '99 SD with 215k miles for $9000, and picking up a clean, rust free Ex with 160k miles in North Carolina for $7500. do the math.
i do miss the torque on the 7.3, but the V10 gets the job done, and in the end they cost about the same for me to run. i dont miss the noise and smell of diesel. the v10 runs smooth and strong and seems to have plenty of life left in it.
For me in looking to pick up another one, its pretty simple: Ive blown up too many diesels always modding em n sled pulling. I need a crew cab, an 8ft bed, n 4x4. A 5.4 would suffice, but for a very small penalty in mpg, Ill take the added power of a V10.
No matter which engine, Im not enthused about the economy. With the technology in these engines, they should do way better. But they dont, so be it.
Previous 06 5.4 needed lots of work and the doors were showing signs that rust was about to take them over along the bottom edge. 08 was listed at an ok price and I wanted an engine upgrade. The trade in on the 06 was actually good based on the amount I'd need to put into it to make it ready for private sale. Dually V10...can't beat the payload/towing capabilites. Wanted a crew cab but not the long bed so this just seemed to fit.
Well I had a '95 F150 supercab, shortbed, 302 and 5 spd, that I used for work and play. Drove it to Texas to visit family and at some point during the trip I realized that my kids we not going to fit back there for long. When I got home I started looking for something bigger as in crew cab. Looked at the 150's then the Superduty and it was an easy decision to get the Superduty, especially as the camper was getting bigger and so was the work trailer. So which engine, I opened the hood of a 250 with the 5.4 and it looked like a toy in there, opened the hood on a 350 with a V10 and fell in love. Put a lot of miles on that 2000 V10 crew cab, short bed. Then bought a '06 PSD which turned into a turd and came back to the V10. If the V10 goes the way of the Dodo bird, well.......
My father bought the first v10 super duty to hit the lot in Calgary in 98.It was Purple(he say's it's plum). F-250 Super cab,shortbox,4x4 XLT well equiped.Very nice truck..I fell in love with it when I saw it,really loved it after driving it.Talked my father-in-law into getting one,he bought a 2000 F-250 supercab, long box,4x4 with 4:30(camper package).I dove them both as I serviced them both(technician by trade).I purchased a 2003 F-350,crew cab, short bax 4x4.2 years ago my brother bought a 99 F-250 super cab, short box manual trans 4x4.We all pull 4000-10,000lbs trailers.WE all love our trucks....afte we all had our turn driving just one of them,we all wanted one.
My 1969 Chevy K20 292 finally gave up the ghost...or rather I spent as much time working on it as driving it...maybe it was the two ton crane I welded on the back and the two ton plus rocks we hauled home to landscape the yard.
We had purchased a 27 foot bumper pull trailer...I run a DJing business and we needed something cheaper to stay in than $250 a night hotel rooms when we did destination weddings in the middle of Idaho (think Sun Valley) and my Chevy 2500 cargo work van was doing fine hauling it on flat paved roads and sucked going uphill and off paved roads.
I was orginally thinking a Chevy 2500 - but then I got to thinking about all the work I get to do on the van - it's a maintenance ***** - and so I went radical and started looking at Fords.
Found a former catering truck used for wildland firefighters on Craiglists, followed by research that lead me to these forums...$9k later and I owned a bright red F250 crewcab 4x4 with 160k miles and leather seats.
She came with a few issues. Interior cab lights were intermitently working. After dropping $800 on a new windshield (cracked, seal leaking) and a new fuse box and gem module (guess where the water went?) we had a great truck. Oh and replacing a couple of the panels and the heater in the drivers side seat.
I also did as recommended and had the plugs all replaced.
Since then I have replaced the hubs with Warns - the original plastic ones were sticking. I added a 15,000 winch. And I am dreaming of headers and a programmer.
My 96 f-250 work truck was getting tired so i was looking for another work truck. I wanted a v-10. I couldnt find any dodge v-10s that were 2000 or newer not that im dodge guy. I did fi.d a deal on a 03 f-350. I bought it. It does the job just fine. Pulls our large camper very nicely. Only complaint is that it doesnt have 4:30 gears. 3:73's should be illegal in these big trucks.
When it came time to replace my '79 F350 dump truck, I wanted a gas engine, a manual transmission and a solid front axle. So that meant a Ford or Dodge. Dodge quit the manual trans with the hemi in 2008 and there was no way I wanted a hemi with their auto trans in a 9,000lb truck, but I also didn't want a 5.4l in a 9,00lb truck.
Then I realized Ford's best keep secret - the mighty V10. I said "that's what I want and with a 6spd." After checking the specs like gearing, capacities and options, the Ford was a no brainer. It has it all over the Dodge. I really like this truck and so far the V10 is the best gas engine I ever owned.
