i just put a big cam in my 5.0 fuel injected motor. i knwo everything worked great befor i put it in. its a .5" lift. well this threw the computer into a fit. now i cant go faster than 75, adn at 75 the check engine light comes on and i loose power. my 4 wheel drive no longer works. i checked teh switch is good. its something in the computer, what can i do to fix htis, or make the computer work with the cam?
first off, we need some info on your rig. you might try and fill out your signature with your bronco info it helps us help you.
Ok now, what year is your rig. More then likly you will need to get a custom chip burned for your computer. is your 4x4 push button or is it the lever style. who did you order the cam from? we need info like that.
hey, i let my friend throw that post up, i think its a 93bronco. 4wd is the shift on teh fly stuff so its electronic shift. i guess thats what you mean by push button? its a summit racing cam. it was odne right...lifters adn valve springs. everything was workgin fine befor the swap. new motor only has like 60000 on it. a couple people suggested just resettign the computer, how is this done?
the problem with our motors is they are Speed Density controled Not Mass Air like the mustang motors are ,and so when you throw in a cam that is to radical for this setup you are going to have driveability problems. Thats why you need to by a custom chip for your rig. I would contact diablo chips and see what they say. you might be stuck removing the cam and putting a stock cam back in because a custom chip will cost you about 200 - 300 bucks.
well a 2-300$ chip isnt too bad. what is this speed density control stuff yout alk about. ive never heard of it befor and would like to knwo a little more abotu it.
i would try using the search feature on this one. You will get alot more information quicker. basically its the electronic system that controls your motor. there is a computer or ECU that gets info from various sensors that alow the ecu to make adjustments to fuel/air mixture , timing and so on. If i were you, I would buy a chiltons or haynes manuel. also just browse the net and find all the info you can about your bronco. When you ordered that cam did the summit guy ask what vehicle it was for and stuff?
High lift , long duration cams are fantastic for top end at the end of the quarter mile or even when you're pulling 6000 rpm through the local mud bog. However for normal street cruising and towing the only thing you have going for you is the nasty chopping sound when idleing through the local drive in. Good Luck!
Quick answer on the speed density question which is different from the MAF system. Speed density uses the vacuum of the engine to determine amount of fuel at given throttle opening. MAF uses actual airflow. Because of this, things that change the vacuum of the engine, which a big cam is the worse, adversely affects the computer.
