This morning for the first time since I've owned this truck the "water in fuel" indicator illuminated during the key-on glow plug phase along with the other lights which temporarily illuminate. The WIF light goes out when I start the engine. This has happened during all subsequent starts throughout the day. A few days ago I drained the baldwin filter on the frame rail and found a small amount of water. Drained the bowl earlier today but had to use a catch pan at work so could not check for water. WIF light behavior continued to occur after bowl draining.
So my questions are:
1. Does the WIF illuminating briefly and going out when engine starts indicate a WIF condition?
2. If not, why did the indicator just start illuminating today?
C'mon guys, help me out a bit here please. I've never seen the "water in fuel" light illuminated before today. Now it comes on for a couple seconds and goes out before engine is started.
Does anyone else see this light along with the other briefly illuminated lights when they turn the key on?
I would think it would be normal to come on during the illumination test, although I can not at this time say with 100% certainty that that is true. Have you tried opening the drain and seeing if it illuminates after draining the supposed water?
If I'm correct and it is part of the illumination test, it is possible that your bulb behind the light was "flaky" and may have reattached it's filament. I will go out and see if my WIF light comes on.
I checked and see that others did as well, yep, comes on during normal lamp test. You might have an issue with the bulb or possibly a poor connection for the fuel bowl heater/WIF plug.
Great, thank you very much for checking. It is curious that it never has illuminated before but maybe it took an actual WIF event to wake it up...
My WTS light works fine except when outside temps are below 55F, then it doesn't illuminate at all even though GPs are running. Maybe the squirrely behavior is related.
Anyway it's a non-issue now that I know it is part of the normal lamp test. Thanks.
