water in fuel light

my water in fuel light started flickering for about 20 seconds on the way to work and on the way back. is this something i should worry about? how does it know if there is a presence of water?

You should drain the water from your seperator. There is a sensor that sensed the presence of water.

Unless your truck started bucking or running rough when the WIF light was flashing, I'd say Jim has the right diagnosis. Drain the fuel filter bowl, preferably into a glass jar where you can see how much water is in there. Don't forget to cycle the key a couple of times after draining the water out to purge the air.

very simple to do, see owner's manual for instructions. Should take all of 30 seconds from start to finish.

Here are some pictures and instructions for changing the filter. Since you aren't replacing the filter, you don't need to follow the instructions. You can reach the yellow drain valve without removing the plastic engine cover. Just look at the first couple of pictures and it will help.
