Front Hub Bearing Replacement?

Hello,

I have just taken my front hubs off and wanted to pop out the cups to replace them. However, before beating on them, I thought that I would check in with you guys to see if there are any tricks. Would it be safer to take them to a machine shop? There is a great shop in town that I trust. I definitely do not want to mess up the hub.

Thanks, Steve

Are you talking about the bearing races? If so, drive them out from the outside with a brass rod and hammer.

Yes, the bearing races. Brass rod? Is it the same to install them? Taping around to keep them square? Thanks, Steve

Take the old bearing cup and grind about 50 thou off the OD, then use it to drive in the new one. I put the thin edge of the old cup against the thin edge of the new one.

Ross, That worked really well. I pounded them out with a punch, then used my grinder to shave off a bit and they went in with a bit of pounding on a plate over the old races. They are now back on the truck. Soon I will have the new steering box in, drag link back on and then back on the road. I hope to drive her some before the rain comes. I don't have wipers yet. Thanks again, Steve
