well this morning i talked to the mech and he said the truck still will not start in the morning when its dead cold. it will, however, start sometimes during the day, so some progress has seemed to be made. i think im going to either have it towed back to my house for me to fool with or towed to another mechanic that i know. despite what the mech said, i still think this is a ground problem. i had an 87 mustang do the same exact thing to me, and it ended up being bad ground cables. i will probably replace all of the cables and go from there
I have a 92 with a 5.0 and it would never start in the cold unless I pumped the gas. It would run horrible and shake the whole truck until it warmed up, but only when it was cold. If it was warm out, it fired right up. Turned out it the computer had a blown capacitor in it. I soldered in new ones and all has been well since

yes, exactly. i got the truck back. how many grounds does this thing have? im gonna try that out and when it doesnt work, im bringing it to another mechanic that i know much better.

how did you test the capacitor? my problem seems to be an ignition issue. when my truck does actually start, it usually runs fine.

Try this, key off, multimeter positive to battery positive post, multimeter ground to the distributor housing...see what you get for voltage.

I pulled out the computer and kept it in the house all night to get to room temperature. First thing in the morning I plugged it in and it started great! So from there I knew it was the computer issues. So I pulled the cover off and inspected it. I noticed that one capacitor had a leg broke off. (they have 2 and are soldered in) the other 2 capacitors had leakage. I checked the numbers on them and ordered in new capacitors off Ebay. It cost me about $6 for the capacitors and I soldered them in.
well i drove the truck for the first time having it back today, and i have no 1st or 2nd gears. i know this truck SOMETIMES gets a little stuck into first gear. these guys must have gotten it stuck into first and then dumped the clutch, thus self dustructing the inside of the trans. and i still have an ignition problem. i went down to the guy who had the truck and he told me that its a clutch problem and they kept having to start in third to keep the rpms down. bull. i just put that clutch in. they blew this tranny up. thats my rant for today
just an update on my horror story, i had the tranny rebuilt, then had the truck towed to my buddy's mechanic shop. he looked at it for about an hour and realized that my coil was bad. swapped in a used coil that he had hanging around, and presto, the truck is running good as new again. the first mechanic said he swapped in a new coil and it didnt help. he must have swapped in a defective coil. i learn more and more every day that new doesnt always mean good. so now the truck is running and shifting better than ever. i hope it doesnt do anything like this to me again. thanks for all the input!
