Intermitent starting problem in the cold

Been having an odd problem with getting my truck to start. Pass couple of days I've gotten out from work and gone to start the truck. It cranks just fine but wont start, acts like there is no gas. Let it for a minute or two and try again and it will start right up and keep running with no other problems. Go to leave for the work the next day and the same issue. Weird thing is the problem only seems to happen when its cold out 30F so or below. I was thinking fuel pump but I'm not sure. Any ideas on what to check?

Edit Its a 2002 Excursion XLT with the gas 5.4

Mine did the same thing and it turned out to be the fuel pump. Cold weather exacerbated the issue, and it was most common after sitting overnight.

Turn the key to the "on" position, do you hear the fuel pump?

Try cycling the key to the Run position a couple of times for about 3 to 5 seconds before attempting to start it, then crank it and see if it starts normally. Sounds like a pump getting lazy.

Every time its done I have been at work by myself or leaving for work so I haven't a second person to listen at the tank for the pump. Truck started right just fine for me this morning on my way home and tonight when I came in. If she keeps running a couple more weeks so I can get my paycheck and find a good mechanic to put it in.

You shouldn't need a second person to hear it. Turn the ignition on without cranking and you should hear a properly functioning fuel pump come on for about two seconds.

I have some new info the problem. Coming into work tonight it wouldn't start. The theft light on the cluster panel was rapidly flashing. I then turned the ignition off and then back on, then I waited for the light to turn off. The theft light did not flash and the truck started right up with no trouble. Stopped to get a pizza, started right back up no problem. Stopped at the gas station for a pop, turned the ignition and the theft light is flashing rapidly again and the truck wont start. Turn the ignition off and on again and wait for the lights and it starts right up again.

Could the chip in the key or the ring in the ignition cylinder be going bad?
