First and 4 most mod?

I have always had a gasser and just bought my first 6.0 PSD. It's an 05 model and I am wanting to know what is the first thing I should do to increase the horsepower and, or overall engine performance? Please let me know any and all of your opinons please. I'm kind of excited about this little truck and I'm really wanting to add a couple of goodies to it. But, with that said, I'm not wanting to make a dragster out of it, just a great running, performing truck.
Thanks in advance folks

1st and foremost is invest in gauges so you can see how healthy your truck is. ScanGauge is a great unit for the money ~ $160 in AutoZone. The Edge CTS is a little more flashy and more expensive.

Also, go down to the dealer and ask them for an Oasis report so you can see what's been done under warranty. That will also help you with making a decision.

These motors can make a lot of horses, but first thing is to evaulate your motor's overall health. To do any serious tuning you'll need to install head studs first. If you don't, you'll regret it later with expensive repairs.

Welcome to FTE. Spend a lot of time reading and learning, then go for broke on the mods...

As far as first mods I would do a exhaust to help it breath better and gauges to see where your at. Popular gauges to do are Pyro, Boost, fuel press, trans temp and Isspro EV2 gauges are awesome if you are keeping it to just 3-4 but if you want to go with more gauges then that I would defiantly look hard at the performax gauges to keep the wires you have coming into the cab down to a minimum. If I was to buy a 6.0 right now the first things I would do would be all of the above then a brand new ford OEM oil cooler, EGR delete, ARP head studs with OEM gaskets only and when the heads are off make sure the heads are dead flat, after you do all that you will have a bullet proof 6.0 that you can tune with some innovative tunes and be at 400+ Hp buts thats what I would do, check out the links below to get an idea on everything.
Riffraff Diesel Performance Parts: - Black Face/ Red Pointer/ Black Bezel
Riffraff Diesel Performance Parts: - Aluminized Single Exhaust
Riffraff Diesel: ARP Headstud Kit
Riffraff Diesel: Sinister EGR Valve / Cooler Delete

Like new to diesels said scangauge2 is the best moniter for the money nothing does as many things ,its 160 at auto zone . Oil temps vs coolants are what need to be checked first and fuel press . Scangauge doesn't do fuel press. Need to find out what shape oil cooler is in.

If you have the money, a DashDAQ is an amazing piece of gear as for as a truck monitor and data logger goes. It can't read EGT or fuel pressure, but with the enhanced Ford parameters, it can read HUNDREDS (over 700, I think) of sensors. It makes it easy to get a diagnosis if you have problems. You just have to talk to the right person that will tell you what to look at. If you do a data log session, you can pull the SD card out and email a file of the things you monitored to people in the know, or watch it yourself and report the results.

+1 on the gauges first! Stand alone for oil and fuel pressure and exhaust pyro. Digital OBD plug in monitor of your choice for everything else. See the tech folder for a good explanation of why the factory gauges can't be trusted.

I'm much in the same boat as you but not looking to add any power. My first items of business were an oil/filter change and fuel filter change. I've added a coolant filter. Scangauge II is one of the most useful things I've added. Next will be the blue spring and coolant flush. My Oasis report was pretty clean. My truck must've blown the engine at some point. I know it has a dealer installed replacement engine with only 100k miles on it but 228k on the odometer. Luckily, I was able to get a pretty good history from both the previous owners of the truck.

Afraid not. I personally know of 3 people that have done the EGR delete and still had issues. Install was clean, kits themselves were clean. What you are taking out is more of the messenger then it really is the root cause of the issue. Like most people though, it's EPA equipment, so it must be vile.

This isn't going into the legal aspects of such a mod either, especially ironic considering you are out in cali.

As Tex said, the oil cooler 98% of the time is the root cause of egr cooler problems. No egr cooler no delta to compare.

Gauges first to ensure everything is within standard and modify from there. Personally, I would go with a plug in monitor for everything. No need to clutter your rig up with something else that gives you the same info as a OBD plug in monitor would.

True on the oil cooler, but even with an egr delete you still have ECT/EOT temps and delta to monitor. The oil cooler is the one to watch.

I can understand that, however, deleting it doesn't do away with the Oil Cooler issue which is the main reason that they mention for taking it out. That just doesn't follow.

Yep, I want it all GONE. Sure your's may work now and you have never had a issue good for you but where I go I don't want one to fail and leave me stranded some where. What are you saying about EGR deletes and issues? which the delete or puking coolant.
